1.
No, they are not threaded and nor do they have an Allen key socket unfortunately.
I like the contour of the strings to match that of the fingerboard, and my Willis basses have got me accustomed to a pickup that does the same. I need to alter the pole pieces firstly for consistent string to string volume as you'd rightly guessed, and secondly because I sometimes catch my fingertip on the edge of the furthest G-string pole piece...
Check out the Fender noiseless pickups. The pole pieces are at staggered heights to match the radius of the fingerboard. UK prices are between £80 and £110 on ebay.

  2. then again, bosy and electronics are of unknown origin - could be a ply body and some really crappy pickups - maybe even genuine Fender pickups for a standard jazz.

So, I'd check ebay for the cost of a mighty mite neck, badass and D-tuner and work on the assumption that the rest is crap.

  3.
fantastic prices, not suprised they are all sold

thats the cheapest iv ever seen a punch factory up for :)
I just scored a Punch Factory for £43 inc shipping (from Sweden), but yes, seriously good price.

  4. I love the sound of my Audere preamp. The Z-mode coontrol gives you loads of tonal variation. I also like the choice of 2EQwith 2 volumesor 3EQ with blend.

I just bought a second Audere JZ3D - just over £100 inc. priority USPS shipping plus I expect to pay another £30 duty and Parcel force admin fee. That's very, very cheap for such a piece of kit.

The Audere is a breeze to fit - no soldering.

  5. I always check ebay for typos. I've never forgiven myself for being sniped on a lovely Fendre[sic] base[sic] up for sale in the states. It was a lovely transparent teal MIA Deluxe ash Jazz V with maple board. It went for £420 or something. Even factoring in £100 shipping and £100 duty and admin, that's a hell of a lot of bass for the money.

  6. This whole relicing business seems a bit bizarre to me.

I mean, if I found a nice Porsche Speedster for sale, I'd hardly ask the owner to drive it into a couple of walls to give it more character, but that's effectively what people are asking for in instruments.

  7. They're still in business because the British public still cannot grasp the concept of voting with it's feet. We're renowned for tolerating long queues, crap food, dirty expensive trains and being kept on hold for 15 minutes by our telephone or cable company because they've screwed up our online bill.

  8. I have had to relinquish the study/spare bedroom/junk room/music room to make way for a bedroom for ankle biter #2

I have also had a major gear clearout.

I now have 5 Rockstand wall hangers up for grabs

These are £8.50 from StringsDirect including shipping. I'll let these go for £5.50 each inc. shipping or £25 the lot and I'll even chuck in some more rawplugs.

  9. late 80s/early90s 2nd bass collections - the properSGC Nanyo. Absolutely no resale value for some reason, but these were quality basses at the time. The 5s have an amazing flat neck profileand are unbelieveably light.

I mean look at these. OK, it's £200, but it's five string and one of the higher spec models with translucent finish

  10. get a pen and paper ad knock yourself up some extra notes to help you remember the parts.

I have to remember some shockingly complex parts for my covers band and I find the best way is to break the song down into manageable chunks. Charting out the different sections and adding a few pointers really helps.

  11. I used to use Peavey gear and am ashamed but man enough to admit that I only moved it on out of brand snobbery.

However, at the time, I thought my 410TX sounded better than a Trace Elliot 1048H and SWR Goliath and Hartke Transporter. The thing I could never get on with was the weight.

There are a few short comings. My 410TX had sharp edges to the grill that tore a couple of pairs of jeans. There's also no protection circuit for the tweeter, so if you turn it up too high and send a particularly juicy signal through it you'll get a nice burning sound.

  12.
With the Audere: More punchy sound, kinda agressive one (the preamp output signal is adjustable with a small screw inside). Being able to adjust lows, mids and highs separately is also very important to me; the mix is way better now.
So I'd say: more punch and a more ''accurate" sound (is it the proper word ?).

I'm afraid my English is too poor to describe the differences the way I feel so why not listening to a soundclip I recorded after I had put the Audere: here (with much reverb :) ) and one I recorded before: here (something more ''roots'') and make your own opinion ? Hope it helps.
The Audere is unbelieveable ona jazz bass. I have the deluxe model (with passive style tone) on my main Jazz V and the Z-mode switch really works well. Low-Z mode gves it a fat aggressive sound that really brings out the B. High-Z mode on the bridge pickup has alovely passive bark to it.

With the exchaneg rate so favourable, I'd definitely reccomend one - mine was £135 inc shipping and customs charges.

  13. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Carvin-6-string-bass...1QQcmdZViewItem

This looks very much like my old 6 string, which I bought from an ebay seller in the US and sold on a few months later - something I kind of regret. IF it is the same bass, it has mahogany wings and neck, with a lovely flat neck profile- similar to the Status I believe. Fingerboard will be ebony, pickups Carvin's own humbucking j style and preamp with 2 band EQ.

The pickups are probably the own weak point on this bass. Replacing them with Barts, Basslines or EMGs would really allow this bass to sing.

    currently £200.

  14. This little beauty's been discussed before.

It's made of pine - loads of lovely big knots in the wood.
He strung it with strings that were only 0.05" apart in guage (120,115,110,105... you get the gist) I'm surprised the neck hasn't just folded in two - I bet it's nice and warped though.

Fair play to the guy for attempting such an ambitious project, but face it, the instrument's fundamentally flawed in design and execution.

  15. Multi effects units all tend to be produced by large electronics companies with the R&D budgets to develop the custom ICs used in these units.

Digital designs are not superior to analogue designs, just ultimately cheaper, once the above R&D costs have been covered because you can produce an effect with a fraction of the components.

You get good digital products and bad digital products. If all digital products were ultimately superior to their analogue counterparts, music studios wouldn't bother spending top dollar on high quality valve compressors and vocal preamps, they'd pop down to Sound Control and stock up on Zoom multi-FX units instead.

  16. This falls right in the middle of your budget.

400 Watts into 4 Ohms, 230W into 8 Ohms stereo or 800W into 8 Ohms mono bridged

    They're very very light.

I used to own one and didn't rate it - it didn't seem to do much through my SWR Triads, but in hindsight, I think that was more a shortcoming of the cabs which seemed very voiced towards an SWR amp and flapped through anything else.
