1. I've owned just about every heavy cab ever made.

I started with a Peavey 410TX and added a second
I then moved on to a Peavey 810TX
I then got an SWR Triad and added a second

I'm a pretty strong bloke - I could carry the 4x10s and the Triads one in each hand from the car to the venue. The Peavey was a unique challenge - especially as the path to my house has around 20 steps!!!

I finally got sick of lugging them about and went lightweight. At the time you just put up with the hassle of heavy gear becase you don;t think there's an alternative.

I now own a pair of Tech cabs - 2 x 12 and 1 x 15 and being able to load in one handed without grunting like a contestant on the world's strongest man is empowering

  2. It's 4/4 but it makes most sense to me to count it as

one and two and one and two and one and two and

the guitar chord should go on the first 'and' and the snare on the 'two'

That sounds suitably chilled to my ears.

often, going one two three four one two three four one two three four can have you racing through a tune.

  3. Plenty of people fall for them

  4. I tried bi-amping my rig years ago. Whilst the bottom end through a 15was certainly impressive, the top end through 10s was lacking. I was able to rig up a decent compromise using an SWR SM400 whereby I sent a full range signal to a 2 x 12 and a sub signal (below 120Hz) to a 1 x 15. I reckon you might the results of this approach more than a complete high/low split

The only person with a problem seems to be you,men like women(unless you happen to be gay)and the fact shes a good bass player is a plus point.
im not saying"id walk over a mile of broken glass on all fours, backwards just to gargle in her dirty bathwater" i dont think shes that good!
Maybe that's because Tanc's a woman. I guess We have every right to play bass, or any other instrument was a bit too subtle for the likes of you.

  6.
I picked up one of these at Soundcontrol during lunchbreak for £199. Almost bought more to flog on ebay following the Crate Powerblock earner!

You'll be pretty sorted for a lightweight rig with that head and the Secos.

  7. A former friend of mine used to say he didn;t need to practice because he was good enough on guitar. The reality was that he wasn't very good at all.

The best musicians are those that put in the effort - not just because of the hours of practice but because of the mindset with which they approach their instrument. It's not about new techniques either, it's about paying attention to the quality of the notes you produce - the execution, consistency, choice, timing.

There's no harm in telling yourself that you're pretty good. Just make sure you have the humility to end it with '...but I could be so much better' It'll make you a better player.

I also think it's unfair to judge a player on YouTube showpieces. They're often meant to be extreme examples of flashy technique. It's entertainment after all.

  8. OBP-1

There's an Aguilar obp-1 for sale on this board for £40. I reckon you could find a decent enough tech to fit it for the same. £80 to fit a quality 18V preamp in your bass.

I reckon that'd solve any oomph problems :)

  9.
My dad once pissed on an electric cow fence ... no fun at all, I can tell you :)
Was that before or after you were born? Just want to know how 'not fun' it might be just in case I get caught short during an evening jog through the country park nearby.

Also, on the occasions where I've seen bands overdo effects it's been one or two effects or most that have been overused - fuzz and wah are the usual guilty parties - especially in the hands of an irritating bass player desperate to show off a few slap lines.

  10. I once spoke to a luthier who said the main reason for dead frets was a gap between the fret and the filesslot on the neck. His solution to prevent dead spots was to stick a blob of glue in the fret slots and then press in the fret. You could get a guitar tech to do this for you.

Hello the message i was attempting to get across is exactly what bod 2 has said ,but mine seems to have been misinterprated, and kinda blown out of proportion, ive seen many bands overdo things with too many effects where its just not neccesary.theyre nice to have but using them sparingly can often be more effective.sometimes its the less the more.by the way MR PED ive been in the studio on many occasions and have never felt i needed to use a mass of effects to get a good sound.there arent many engineers who are willingly gonna give you a crap bass sound, especially when its there reputation and often livlihood at stake.last time i was in the studio the engineer was actually a bass player himself which was nice!

    MB1.
I believe the title of this thread is 'are modelling amps accurate' not 'do lots of effects make your bass sound crap'. Perhaps if you stayed on topic for the purpose of aurguing your case, people wouldn't get so hot under the collar.

  12.
I have one. I didn't notice any real difference to the tone of my bass so I took it off again.
Would you be interested in selling it?

  13. Just saw that Guy Pratt is reading from his book 'My Bass And Other Animals' at Borders Bookshop, the Market Place, Kingston Upon Thames
on Thursday 7th June at 7pm.

If you're driving into Kingston, there's usually some free parking after 6:30pn in Milner Road, behind Surrey County Hall see Location Here

Otherwise, it's a 5 minutes walk through the pedestrianised shopping centre to the riverside.

There's load of nice pubs along the waterfront and somevery good restaurants, including a Tapas bar, a great Vegetarian restaurant (Riverside Vegetaria), plus burger and pizza restaruants, Nandos, Wagamama.

Unless my wife's in labour, I plan to be there. Be nice to meet a few of you.

  14.
Another vote for Wal - a bit silly really as I've just sold mine but made a tidy profit even though it was the untidyest example I'd ever seen. About 10 years ago you could pick one up for buttons - I know one guy who had trouble shifting his in Glasgow and eventually settled for £350 and thought he'd done well at that!

80's Aria Pro basses, early 90's Warwicks, limited edition Lakland/Musicman basses maybe. Who knows what else...
I had a similar experience. I sold someone an Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string a few years ago and the guy had a Wal fretless that he lent me as collateral whilst he was sorting out the funds. He would probably have accepted a straight swap at the time. At the time, I didn't appreciate the true value of such an instrument. I also owned Ped's Vigier fretless at the time and didn't think I needed it.

  15.
What about Warwicks? No potential there? They've reached a point of market saturation and were widely endorsed.
I think it depends on whether there are recordings out there that have an unmistakeable Warwick sound. Wals certainly have the potential to be vintage classics because of the unmistakeable bass sound of the likes of Nick Beggs, Mick Karn, etc... Steinbergers maybe because of the reggae connection.

  16. I don't think any of today's mass-produced basses have the potential to become highly desirable classics. There aren't any other makes that have such mass appeal. You don't see Ibanez, ESP or Dean instruments on TOTP, ...Later or any televised festivals.

  17. the concept of 'Sounding Better' is subjective and relative.

My drummer mate did a session for Dizzee Rascal on '...later with Jools Holland' the other week. The bassist for the session had a very nice Ken Smith. Basschat members have all commented on the bass and how good it sounded. Nick Cave's band Grinderman were also playing, and their bassist had a beat up old Precision. My friend says that Dizzee's bass player went straight over to said Precision and was mavelling over it. Based purely on the actual market rate for the instrument itself witout the vintage element factored in, the Ken Smith is maybe 3 or 4 times more expensive and the product of many more hours labour.

Yet, given a boutique neck through active five string and a beat up old Precision (unsure of Vintage), the precision wins- on this occasion.

    'Tis a strange world

The guitarists I play with have lots of different tunings

As for me, I can't be doing with all that, so I play a 5 tuned BEADG

  19.
MB1. :)

    NO!
I can't say how 'accurate' each model is, but, for example, on my POD XT Live, the SWR model has an undeniable SWR slant to the sound.

However, I have noticed a lot of strange glitches when listening through headphones - there's something not quite right about the sound and I've experienced this on a number of Line 6 devices with a number of basses (active and passive) and using different headphones. I mainly use a set of BeyerDynamic DT150s - believe me, these can take some punishment.

The overdriven models seems to be the biggest culprits. I think that pushing up the gain of the SVT model makes it nearly unuseable.

At least you're being optimistic about the whole debacle

  21.
I think the Bass Merchant in Essex do the Tech Cabs, though I think they'd pretty much sold off most of the old style cabs and were due to get in a load of the new style.

    HTH

    Rich
Actually, I spoke to Mike at the Bass Merchant recently about Tech gear (and have since bought their last Tech head off them). He said they probably weren't going to get the TecAmp range in because they build their own Neo cabs now. Plus, they do much better with GK andMarkbass gear.

The Bass Centre Deutschlandhave some of the Tech range still in stock, but their prices still aren't that good.

Kalim on this forum is selling a Tech 2 x 10 that he bought from Warwickhunt. For £290 shipped it's a no brainer. Unfortunately, I just splashed out £450 on the aforementioned Tech TVM600 as well as stillneeding to fork out for the repair of my Tech TVM350 that's proving quite a git to fix. Oh yeah, and my wife is expecting our second child anytime in the next 3 weeks! Otherwise, I'd have had it like a shot.
