  1. The dreadful Lip Up Fatty

    That's Entertainment

    Monkey Man

    Message for you Rudi

Just a few songs from a former band whose guitarist/singer was not just not a lead guitarist, he was probably the worst guitarist in the band (as he would be the first to admit).

Just dropped by to say the title of this thread would be a great opening line for a song.

Where do you stand in a five piece band

Would you stand on the left or the right

Would you stick your headstock in the singer's ear

I will try not to do it tonight

I'll stand by with a little help from the band

I'll squeeze in with a little help from the band

Gonna try with a little help from the band

Dum dum de dum with a little help from the band

But if the gig is a funeral send-off, or a commemorative gig, it’s a different story. Those are all about making people cry before you pack up your gear and hit the sauce

Oh, that's easy. I just play a five minute bass solo.

I was expecting a lot more interest in this. Digital modellers have not been my cuppa in the past, but I was hoping this one might not have that obvious digital sound to it.

It's rather a step backwards with a fixed signal path rather than the multiple building block approach that's been in favour for the last decade at least.

I've an '97 Fortress and an '02 Infinity SN.

The 2nd fret on the Fortress B string  (C#, metal boys!) is a little flattened and could do with reshaping. Other than that, it's great.

The Infinity, less so, but only because Warwick were using lower quality parts.

I had 2 E- string tuners strip their gears and spit out their tuning posts, and the JAN III fell apart like they all do.

Tuners replaced with licensed Hipshots. Brass JAN II now on nut duty.

In summary,  hardware more of an issue on 00's basses, but nothing beyond the realms of DIY.

Wouldn't an 02 Infinity have a JAN II on it, and were there brass JAN IIs or did you mean the later brass JAN III? Mine are all original JANs (plus a couple of other basses I've put original JANs on) so I haven't got any first hand knowledge of JAN IIs and IIIs.

You don’t need a sub for a silent stage. Just a decent set of full range PA tops which can cover the lows in the same manner as your bass cabs.

Fair enough. So I just need the slave to lug the full range PA tops around, and to buy them in the first place.

If I were setting out on a journey from zero to a gigging band, and the other members were amenable, and somebody else could do the PA storage, I would try the IEM and silent stage route - after all, if nobody liked IEMs, it would still be perfectly feasible to run a quiet stage with monitors and no backline. However, I'm 66, doing 10-15 gigs a year at pub rates, not sure how many years of gigging I have left, own and store the PA, and have a limit of 10kg per item of equipment.

  7. I saw a band years ago who worked to this stupid idea of the drummer having to follow the rest. The drummer was excellent, she was a rock solid timekeeper and very competent. The guitarists simply ignored what she was doing and randomly speeded up and slowed down, and she had to follow what they were doing. They sounded bloody awful. I've always played in bands where the drummer set the time - a couple of them have been a little erratic but most have been good (and able to start at the right speed).

By agreement with the other 4 members I'm always the last to arrive at gigs - gives the drummer, KB and PA chaps time to get set up - also, I usually have furthest to travel.

End result of this is that I have no choice where I position my gear, so my response would be 'I'm squeezed into any corner available, and grateful for it!"

With a former three-piece band, I would arrive first, set up the PA and my bass rig, and then when the drummer and guitarist arrived I'd be squeezed into any corner available.

well taking the logic to its ultimate conclusion wouldn't that be all we really need regardless of fretless or fretted ..just the dots along the leading edge, everything else would presumably be decorative fluff?

Yes, but for some reason lined fretlesses are popular. It seems strange, you hardly ever see training wheels on bicycles, but manufacturers make most fretlesses lined, and when you're buying a custom bass second-hand you don't get to specify it.

Largely thinking it's a shake up between the B2-4 and the B6.  Just checking on the B2-4, is that controllable from PC?  & is the android app live now?  I am not a huge fan of bluetooth control & prefer to my laptop, but vaguely remember issues from reviews with the B2-4...

AFAIK, no and no. Neither Tonelib-Zoom nor (as far as I can make out) Zoom's own GuitarLab will control either the B6 or B2-Four, either on Windows or Android. Zoom seem obsessed with iOS to the exclusion of all else.

It's a shame as this one isn't at all heavy! Still, it's got a big crack at the neck. Never a good look!

It's very nice though. I can't imagine how they're making a profit on this.

They have less markup as Thomann owns HB so they can sell them at cost if they want without making a loss, then flog you all the accessories for a profit.

I'd encourage everyone to try IEMs and stick with them for a bit, get a good mix and keep the volume at a decent level.

OK. All I have to do is upgrade the vocal-only PA so it'll take bass too, find somewhere to store the active sub and employ a slave to move it, mic up the drums, and either mic up the guitar amps or persuade the guitarists to go through the PA. A couple of thousand quid and an extra hour of setting up per night should cover it.

  13. Alternatively, just get a Zoom MS-60B (not a Plus) and set it up to cycle between patches. Use the Tonelib Zoom editor to set up the patches.

& @tauzero WRT to the B2-Four, my understanding of that was a horrible display and not the same sounds as the B6, but I am trying to read everything and treading new ground, so happy to be corrected!  I think this review of the guitar equivalentreally made me think I needed to spend more: https://guitar.com/reviews/effects-pedal/zoom-g2-four-g2x-four-review

Not sure how valid that is for the bass version, mind, but I am lucky enough to have the room to get the B6, if it's an upgrade....

    https://yoshblog.com/en/review/b2-four/

From looking over the various reviews of the B2 Four, buyers seem to be very happy with it. There's a very detailed 4* review at Amazon.com that's worth looking at - https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B0BW6BSPLV/ref=cm_cr_unknown?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=four_star&reviewerType=all_reviews&pageNumber=1#reviews-filter-bar

..everyone goes on about fret lines on a fretless and how superfluous they are ..but nothing about fingerboard dots and led lights on a regular fretted ..go figure.

Fretlesses also have markers, whether they're lined or unlined. Go figure.

I prefer unlined but I'd rather have my lined fretless Sei than no fretless Sei.

Saying 14 weeks when I clicked on the Bax website! Which ties in with Zoom saying the pedal will ship in July. Liking the £135 though. But not getting the thinking behind making the patch editor only available on iOS ☹️

This is something I've been complaining about ever since the Zoom MS-100BT which only had an iOS app. Zoom are ignoring the majority of smartphones and tablets.
