Can't vouch for HB specifically but I bought a J&D 5 string fretless from Music Store Cologne last year for under £130 and it's fine. Just needed a really good set up by someone who knows. The machines they're made on can chuck out perfectly good parts. I found it was the way they were put together let them down.

Soulfinger - up until now I've just kept the volume down really low as well. But I mean really low. This thread had got me wondering if there's something wrong though. Your post reassures me - they just kick out a massive signal.

Not Ashdown. One of the amps is another unfavourite brand, but that meter is reliable with my 'Ray and others but the other gear with input peak indicators is Shure and Eden so I don't think that's the trouble, as I say it's just this one guitar no matter what it goes into. Maybe it's just meant to be that loud? Anyone else use a Tony Levin OLP?

As far as using different instruments with differing outputs goes I've never had a problem. That's what the meter and gain dial are for, one to show me the input level the other to help me set it to the ideal. It's just this one guitar - it's a bit annoying, so I just play it turned down.

Sorry guys been out. Yep new battery, it's just really hot. There's a little dial for winding back the input gain on my wireless which I do when putting an active bass through it after using a passive. I can't turn this low enough!
The low battery is a crackly farty distortion - I've heard that one- this is a big wet fart on the loud low notes. It just overrides any input on any amp, unless the volume is down really low.

Thanks for that, I've printed it off and I just show it to my OH whenever she tries to imply I might have a bit too much gear!

I'll have enough when I never see another bass that makes something odd happen deep inside me.
It never ends though, I don't like the look of the Bongo for instance but there was a blue one for sale on Basstalk a couple of weeks back and when I saw it's picture a little bit of wee came out. Now I want one.

Yes it is, the online bumph talks of a nice 'growl' when it's turned up but this is pure nasty farting distortion. You think there could be a fault?

Behringer V - Amp, big fat stereo graphic and until recently a power amp. I swapped the amp it was a 500w power amp (the v-amp being used as a stereo pre) but it didn't push out enough ooomph for me so I bought an Eden Nemesis which shines it's lovely blue light out of the bottom of the rack. I've got a space left but don't know what to buy, something with green flashing lights would be nice. Couldn't care less what it does just green would balance the other colours.

My OLP musicman copy is a bastard to whatever you put it through. I'm sure there's something wrong with it. You turn the gain off at the input stage and it still distorts. I've never had to turn a bass down to nearly off to get it to play without distortion. Still it's a beauty to play if not to look at.

Have I got a set up menu that covers my clock or is the whole time out? Or am I very late for work!!

Often the only difference is a better quality bass feels nicer, (I'd rather hold the neck of my stingray than anything else one might consider wrapping their left hand round, for instance), stays in tune better and should last longer. I've got some cheap as chips basses that sound gorgeous, it's what you're happy with.

Ive got nearly all the intro but have to go to work so won't finish it yet. One thing I need to know which you might be able to help with is a link to somewhere to create TAB online - I handwrite it all at the mo and that's so stoneaged. if I could tap it onto a template it'd be easy to e-mail you.
This will only be my best guess mind! But I will get it close.

Believe me there's only one that cost over £400 and it's taken me since 1984 to assemble a really quite modest selection.
Mind you being on these fora doesn't help does it? I want a new bass every day visiting here.
