    Thank you!

I did wonder if the regular gauges of those flats would be too floppy at the shorter scale, and it's not like Ti Flats have other gauge options!

I'm pleased to report they feel fine. A little less tension but not as much of a drop as I expected. If a player likes Ti flats then I think they'll still like them on this bass.

I do play quite gently mind you.

I popped some old old TI's cut for a 34" bass on my short scale 4 (30.5") and they felt great! I replaced them with new short scale ones, and they're basically the same string, just wound for a shorter scale, same tension, same feel, same sound. Thank you for uploading a recording with a low B though, as I'm now happy to go buy a new 6er set to try on my 31.5" basses!
Sounded lovely by the way too.

  3. The GR Bass 2x12 Slim cabs really appeal to me too.

As far as concerns go, I have read of a few fit and finish issues with the AT Carbon cabs, but I haven't heard anything bad about their wooden cabs.

They're half the price of the carbon ones and only a little heavier but still light for a cab if it's size, I think in the case of the 2x12 Slim the Carbon one is about 13kg and the wooden one about 19kg.

I haven't tried these cabs, but I'm sure there's someone on here who has the 2x12 Slim as their main cab.

  4. The original Ibanez Promethean P5110 combo would be a very good fit.

Hard to find, but there is one on Facebook Marketplace right now though.

Make sure it's the original one you look for, every single version after the first one is pants.

Right, I've got an ACG with an Easy Uni-Pre 4k in it. I can plug it in, and play for about 15 ish minutes, and then it just fades out. Pulling the tone to passive works but when I switch it back to active, it stays off.  Removing the lead and then putting it back in fixes it for another 10 or so minutes.

Also, I can make it do it sometimes by pulling the Bright pot to on.

I thought it was the battery, but I've changed that to no avail.

    Any ideas?

I'd give John East a shout, he's incredibly helpful and I'm sure he'll be able to shed some light on this for you.

Given there's a lot of interest with HPFs these days, with Phil above building his micro 6" cab down to 80Hz, this might make a lot of sense. Small stage amps for monitoring really don't need any deep bass at all. I'm not technical enough to know if the quoted 90Hz is a hard cut-off or what though.

I also think Warwick might be a little more honest with their ratings too than others perhaps?

Their previous cabs, and the series before that had a bass roll off higher than we're told we need for a low B, and yet I never heard anyone saying their cabs lacked low end.

I'd be really tempted to try their 1x12 cab, but I do wish they did an 8 Ohm version...

Yes and my fretless Gus G3 - both to BassChat members.

I would have loved to keep them, but I don't play any fretless bass in either of the two bands I an currently in, and have no plans to join a band where they would get used, so it seemed pointless to keep two instruments of such quality sitting unplayed in their cases for even more years on the off-chance that I would find a need for them at some point in the future.

I also sold a lot of other luthier/custom-made instruments including two Overwater Originals, a Pedulla Buzz, Yamaha BJ5B, Born To Rock F4B, Manne Mandobass, Atlansia Solitaire, Andreas Shark and Hallmark WingBat.

I've kept just the instruments that get regular use.

Makes sense. Shame though, your Sei was the sexiest Sei I'd ever set my eyes on, the colour scheme and wood selection in particular, impeccable taste.

It depends what you want to do with multiple bass guitars. Do you need a back up or are you going to be playing different styles of music that require different basses?

I recently trimmed down my rather excessive "collection" of 50+ guitars and basses to just 6: Two Gus G3 5-string basses for one band I play in (one as the main bass and the other a spare). An Eastwood Hooky Pro 6, bass VI for the other band I play in with a Burns Barracuda as a back up (this will most likely be replaced by a second Eastwood or a Gus to the same spec depending on what I can afford). I also have two guitars for recording and if I ever decide to play guitar in a band again.

    Did you sell your Sei?!

That is a good point about favouring one over the other and that has crossed my mind. 🤔

I've actually ended up with 7 ACGs, and there's actually very little crossover in what they do, by design too so I can't be asked by "the boss" which ones are spare... ;)

It's certainly worth thinking about this though, it's a very good point.

To be on honest no - I haven't played a Shuker before. That said I'd never played an Overwater either and was extremely happy with my J5 when it arrived.

What was it about Shuker's that didn't appeal to you?

Basses are very personal, what people like and dislike is often deeply personal and often irrational to others.
@BigRedX is just trying to make sure you are cautious is all, same would apply to buying from any builder really.

I noted before that I moved on my Shukers as they didn't really speak to me like my ACGs do, but again, that's entirely personal and impossible to quantify, there's absolutely nothing wrong with those basses though and I loved them while I had them.

I think you just need to be very clear on what you need/want/expect from a builder.

Having been through the process blind with Overwater, I think you're going to find getting what you want a lot easier though, but if things like specific weight, neck profile, balance etcs are important, just be sure that you get all that sorted out up front. As I mentioned before Jon may well go to the next UK Bass Show, in April, but I believe he's extremely accommodating with regards to popping in for a chat, so maybe that would be a good idea if you can make it work, either that or speak to other Shuker owners and see if you can arrange a noodle?

  11. I think if you used an SWR Redhead for home practice you might get in trouble...
I used to own an original Ibanez Promethean P5110 combo which was plenty powerful for gigging. I replaced a MarkBass LittleMark and Aggie GS112 with it and didn't miss any volume whatsoever. Plenty loud enough for small gigs as long as you're not playing metal, and really useful for on stage monitoring too as it tilts back nicely. It was one of the rarer early class D amps rated at 500W that I think actually was 500W, or close anyway.

The more recent ones are pants, but the originals were amazing.

Anyway, there is actually one on FaceBook marketplace right now >> https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/562779298220694/

I might beat you to it though ;)

After speaking to both it seems that Shuker will suit my spec better. Particularly J Type. What model have opted for?

Glad to hear you came to a conclusion on this, most comments I hope were constructive ;)

It does sound like a more traditional build is what you're looking for and Mr Shuker will certainly make you a wonderful instrument.

Please be sure to share progress if you can.

AC Guitars look like they could be made in a garage by an amateur woodworker, whereas Shuker to me says quality.  I would go Shuker all day long.

    Wow!

Have you ever played instruments from either luthier?

And, I should add, I can't imagine you have with a statement like that.

  14. Thank you very much for the update!

Having listened to the video, that's a hell of a lot of sound for a tony amp through a teeny tiny cab!

I expect you're right, with a couple of good 1x12 cabs that little amp would be a force to be reckoned with, frustratingly, although there's a 1x12 Gnome cab coming, it's a 4 ohm job. There is an 8 ohm 1x10 though...
