1.
Thanks Mikey - yes it is a hard habit to adapt from - but I still do 95% of all my playing with 2 fingers and that is hard enough to get smooth and consistant and grooving - however it's nice to expand your technique a bit after a few years - I've been playing for 23 years and I'm still working on stuff eveyday just to be consistent. One NEW thing I did this weekend was start checking out the Southern Indian rhythm system of Konnakol - performed with the voice. I got a video with John McLaughlin demo-ing it - see http://www.konnakol.org/ for more. It's absolutely brilliant - so simple yet can create amazing complex sub-divisions of beats. All without drums. Link to the McLaughlin video: http://www.abstractlogix.com/features_view.php?idno=22 Anyway I started playing those rhythms with 4 fingers and got in creating accents on the 1 of groups of 2, 3 and 4 - and did this with the metronome - and within an hour or so I was coming up with new stuff. So I'm going to keep at this - trying to keep it musical and very much in time and use it to sub-divide grooves, melodic ideas and chords into different time feels - the long and the short of that being that overall my timing started to improve immediately... Damn there's so much to learn. Thanks for the feed(backing) Mike
The technique in the video makes me think of victor wooten but instead of a more thru-string slapping technique with the thumb you seem to utilise more of a stroke. You've naield the techinque though btw. Konnakol is something i've been entranced by very recently as I've always found it hard to coutn say a bar of 4 while letting my hands move independantly in groups of anything but 4 (3,5,7 etc). I'd highly advise you go to http://www.bassplayer.tv then click on artist features and watch kai eckhardt's videos where he demonstrates his use of konnakol. Really inspiring and overwellming to me anyway. Rather similar technique to yours actually. Thanx for the ideos.
2. nice sound and jam guys. not an extremely common tone on the bass but still very nice. gd stuff (Y)
3. Yo yo yo. I'm going to stop going on about large speakers after this topic I promise! I'm looking to buy a new 18" speaker to put in an old cabinet i've aquired and have come across some issues that i'd much appreciate having cleared up by members of this fantastic forum. The first thing I came across is Frequency Response/Range in speakers. In 18" speakers there seems to be a huge range from one manufactured to another of the frequency range their speakers have. Fane's 18XB having a range from 27Hz to 1kHz and on the other hand Precision Devices' PDN.18SB40 has a huge range from 40Hz to 3.5kHz. My thought is that any frequency below 40Hz is pretty much useless due to me being a 4 string player and that a large range is good so that it's not just really low bass that's coming from the 18" cabinet. Can someone help on this?? While I'm here I'll ask about Neodymium speakers (due to the PDN.18SB40 being neodymium). Are there any flaws to having a large neodymium speaker? My initial thoughts were great as an 18" is big enough without having to break your back getting it off the floor but then it crossed my mind that large speakers need to be weighed down somehow due to the power and freq.s they pump out.... Another thing that baffled me in the search for speakers on bluearan was what exactly a subwoofer is. I've always associated subwoofers with pa systems etc but it never crossed my mind if a speaker labeled 'subwoofer' could be used in the same way a guitar/bass speaker can. I shouldn't really think there's a problem with using pa equipement anyway as i know there's some people on the forum who do just that for a hi-fi sounding rig. Is subwoofer just a fancy name for a speaker for low frequency application?? If anyone has absolutely any muses about 18" speakers to share pelase do as i'd much appreciate all the info I can get. I haven't had much response in other topics so i'm still a bit overwelmed. Anything at all...honestly....Thanx a lot everyone, FB1
4.
irony id dead long live sarcasm....? horses for courses mate, see it year in year out with my job....this year students appear to be falling for 450 watt berhinger bass heads and 4x10 cabs............
Oh dear god. Tell them they can't come in unless they promise to not buy anything with the dreaded 'b' word on front. I had a 450watt B*******r and it decided to kill itself from the inside out. I've never liked amp modeling and that stuff, gimme a good ol' amp with turny knobs, no parametric EQ and a back panel you can fry eggs on any day.
5. Hello everyone. In the middle of clearing out my stuff to make way for a new bass amp setup so up for sale in this forum is a AXL Player Deluxe Fretless jazz bass. It's lined, equiped with some ok flatwounds that have barely been used. One tiny dink to the body that's barely noticeable. Really smooth neck, light bass overall, well balanced. Passive electronics all in good nick inside. I'm based in North wales. There's a Fender bass box here ready to be packed with padding and have the bass body and neck put in seperately then sent via courier to your doorstep. No trades please and only serious offers, I really need a quick sale. PICS : Cheers.
6. Fender Jazz bass is haunted by jaco for me, especially his 'jam in E' from modern electric bass DVD. Jackson 5 : I want you back Jamiroquai : Cosmic Girl

9. I have massive issues with the drummer of a band I play in ("drummers being tits?" I hear you cry but yes folks, drummers aren't very nice a lot of the time) and think he needs someone to teach him a lesson and have considered leaving the band all together in an attempt to make him realise how much of a nob end he is most of the time. I've decided to be the bigger man in the end and stick with it, i'm only there for the experience and due to me being friends with the other members of the band now. Be the bigger man I say, he may be a bit smug and think he gets away with everything but in the end as a session player you're going to have to put up with that from time to time and for doing just that, you're the better person I say. Good luck with it all (Y)

12.
If the Laney was 4ohm I would have had it off you before it came to sticking it on Ebay. Good luck though.
Ah unlucky, thanx for the vote of confidence tho . BUmP
13. the behringer head no longer up for grabs due to it no longer working. why exactly is beyond me. I'm going to take it appart to slavage what I can then throw it in the rubish tip.
14. holy crap that's f**king disgusting. What's worrying is that it's been built to have the...erm...'horn' pointing at the players face.
15. After posting the items in the items for sale forum with no luck i thought i'd put them on ebay. Fretless bass, 2x10" cab and behringer 450watt head. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=011 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=011 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=011 Everything's really cheap because i need to get rid, need new amps...to replace these. Thanx everyone.
16. The quotes i've given people up to now (one offer for the 2x10" that has now pulled out and an offer for btoh the head and the 2x10", still pending on his part) for the items are £115 for the 2x10", £105 for the AXL player and £145 for the Behringer head. The pedal is currently being thought about by a friend of mine and i'll know by next thursday whether or not if he wants it. I'm really looking for a quick sale, hence the really low prices, noen of this is faulty and i can get a few people on the forum to verify that for anyone who wants peace of mind....pics....
17. whoa, by level two i was a bit lost i must admit 8-). incredible technique and groove. the ehadstock looks like a yamaha of some sort in his level 13-17 vid.
18. people to check out : James Jamerson (motown bassplayer, some jackson 5 stuff, marvin gaye aswell) Larry Graham (Graham Central Station, solo stuff...) Parilament/Bootsy Collins (so cool!) there's loads to list although these are just my favourites and the main people i've studied funk-wise. Snatch that groove and enjoy!!
19. What.A.Twat. Some guy sooooooooo stuck up his own arse he thinks his opinion is important to everybody. I'd gladly let him take over during he intermission and try and do better if it were my band.
20. last minute bump before the head and cab are put on ebay tomorrow......
21. Thanx. I hope I get it sorted aswell, what with your cab being part of it (Y). a 4x8 really is ideal to balance out the treble with a 18" isn't it!! Hmmmm, i'll get back to you soon hopefully. Thaxn Ben.
22.
I live in Birkenhead. So if you fancy popping over to the Wirral to try it out, you are more than welcome.
Sounds great, i've found an 18" speaker now as i planned but i'm waiting to hear about a deal on here where i'm selling a fretless bass, there's also stuff going up on ebay soon aswell. I hadn't spotted this thread and am sorry for not getting back to you sooner. By all means if you find someone ready to pay before i am then go ahead, i appreciate how long people have been messing you about. But if it's not being taken (god knows why) in the next two weeks then i'll be in touch. Thanx again Ben
