Help - I have fallen for Velvet Animas
olihayhurst replied to adriansmith247's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Yes, Tempera strings are not cheap but I am currently loving the hybrids! Stupidly easy to bow. They seem to do what Evahs claim to but are so much nicer. Rufus Reid uses them and he was on Animas before so I guess they are similar. I was a Velvet Garbo fan back in the day. -

I think this is an old Gear for Music case that they ship new instruments in. I bought it some years ago for £30 to put a bass on a truck for a tour. It has more than served its purpose and has taken up a corner of the house for too long now. It lost a handle along the way but is still functional. Please help me get some space back! (it wouldn’t let me put zero pounds)

This is a ex-school bass. Czech made heavy plywood, swell back, Eb neck. Fingerboard looks like rosewood and has a couple of dings in it. Standard-ish 3/4 size, 105cm scale. It’s a very solid instrument but was being chucked out as the neck had come clean off. Rather than just gluing and screwing it back on I put in some threaded inserts to make it a removable neck. It seems to have worked as has been stable for a good year in which the neck has been on and off a few times. Get yourself a bicycle flightcase and this bass is plane ready. The only problem is it is on the heavy side so the case would have to be light.

Ever fancied playing really low notes on double bass? This is the cheapest way to try it and be able to get back to pitch safely and efficiently. Works really well with a metal E string. I have now got a bass with a low C extension so it’s been gathering dust for a while. Still got the box, instructions and everything. Very easy to fit yourself. Will post at buyers expense.

This bass came from a local music service and part of the money from the sale will be going back to them. It is pretty messy but completely solid and functioning fine. It’s slightly small for a 3/4 size so I have labelled it as 5/8 but I may be wrong about this. The end pin goes high enough that it feels fine to me but would suit somebody on the smaller side. Playing string length 102cm Length of body 108cm Upper bout 49cm Lower bout 66cm Depth of ribs 19cm Swell back, I believe it is a carved top and plywood back. The fingerboard is a light coloured wood (maple?) stained black. It’s just labelled ‘Made in Hungary’. The action is currently fairly low and it’s a bit rattly on the E string but this could be solved with heavier strings or fitting a new bridge or adjusters. The neck joint looks like it has never had a problem. See photos for messy edges/varnish especially on the bottom corners. There are a couple of old cracks on the front which appear to have been glued and do not seem to be open. Priced low for quick and easy sale. Come and have a look/play. It’s not gonna be a pro instrument but would be ideal for someone starting out on upright bass.

Don’t suppose anyone has any old G and D strings of this sort lying around? They are nylon over gut like the Aquila Golden Springs but a lighter gauge. Will happily pay as long as they are in a reasonable state. I have a pair which I still love after playing them for 10+ years but they need replacing and LaBella stopped making them.

Good to know, thanks. I remember a friend had a Strat copy labelled Satellite in probably the late 80s. Think I was quite jealous at the time!

Oh yeah, Teisco Satellite looks like the one. Thanks!

Anyone know what this is? Its short scale (65cm?), fretless with fret lines painted on, amazing shiny quilted finish. The writing on the body looks like it was done with a permanent marker and a stencil. The ‘Jay Dee’ on the headstock is decals. Haven’t taken the back plate off but no serial numbers or anything obvious anywhere else. Can’t find anything similar online but looks like cheap old 60s bass to me from the flat body and hardware so maybe somebody ‘upgraded’ it to be a Jay Dee? It plays pretty good! Any info on this curiosity would be much appreciated!

German style flatback 3/4 size bass, possibly from Czech Republic (no label), I'm guessing mid 20th Century. Carved top, ply back. Perfect for jazz. I've had it as my spare bass for the last 10 years but it's time for it to move on. It's definitely been messed around with at some point. Looks like the neck has had a major repair and been reset at a lower angle but it's all solid. Adjustable bridge and last setup by Jerome Davies. Strung with Evah Pirazzi Weich. You can hear me playing it here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A0-1j_lTBodO1hVxgUlUEuE2cf4-0SRz/view?usp=drivesdk Please ask any questions or come round and have a look.
