Just to be polite, I asked how much they wanted off me for the room, fully expecting that they would say, "don't be daft, it's an audition", but they just came out with the amount, and I paid up because I just couldn't wait to get out.

In fact, there a few on the list that are no more than three chords, which probably explains how I managed to learn seventeen songs in a few hours.
Although I did struggle a bit getting the timing and feel right on "[b][i]With A Little Help From My Friends[/i][/b]", but it's a very enjoyable bass line to play, and I managed to get it right in the end.

I decided to respond to an ad I saw in which a “gig-ready” band needed a bass player to complete their line-up.

The guy told me that they were all very experienced musicians, played in bands for years, and aim to be gigging in a few weeks time.

Now I’m not very confident as I am a late starter, and have only been playing for about five years.
I’ve been in two bands and have gigged a fair bit, but still feel that I am just a novice player, but I thought to myself, just go for it!

Anyway, last night the guy emailed me a selection of songs which totalled [u]seventeen[/u], and I thought sh*t!
I might be able to learn three or four maybe, but I spent today going through them, and I actually nailed the lot, so I thought that even though I might not be up to their standard, at least they should appreciate the fact that I have learnt all the songs in a day.

So this evening, I print off the list and arrive at the studio, and place the list on the floor so that I can see it.
They have a look at it and say "we[i] only know a few of them, and we have only touched on the others briefly[/i]", so I replied, "[i]tell me which ones and we can just do them[/i]", and they had to discuss amongst themselves which ones they [u]all[/u] knew.

We run through just three of them, and they were all over the place with them.
I then suggested we run through the lot anyway, and see if we can make anything of them.
Total waste of time, they weren't even sure what key they were in.

These guys are totally deluded, if they believe they will be ready to hit the road in a few week’s time.

Mind you, I now feel better about my ability, and I suppose that if I can learn seventeen songs in a day, then I can't be too bad!

Yeah, I noticed that the two offers of help from people relatively nearby, were quickly turned down by saying you are too far away, without even waiting to hear what you had to offer, for all the OP knows, you might be in OP's neck of the woods regularly, and could drop by to help sort out the bass.

But it's a good job we all have different tastes, although it does seem that you are on your own on this one.

I did not say adjust the truss rod or intonation, I suggested that you adjust your pickup so that you can get the balance across your strings correct.

A loose nut is not entirely uncommon, and now that you have glued the 'bloody nut' back on, it should not come off next time.

But again, I sense another lack of enthusiasm to act on a suggestion, and it appears that to do something 'properly', could infringe on too much of your time, so I'm afraid you are on your own from now on as far as I'm concerned.

Just a tip for when you next need to replace your strings on a budget.

Well you could start with taking the foam out from beneath the pickup if it wont go down any further.

You can either replace the foam, of try trimming it down so that the pickup screws down further than what it did, and then just keep adjusting the height until you get all the strings balanced correctly. It should take no more than 30 minutes or so.

One of the most played and recorded basses ever, only had ONE pickup, and a neck the width of a cricket bat!

To me, you do appear to be defeatist, most of us on here probably started off with basses far worse than a 'budget' Spector that cost about £300.

I've had basses that I picked up for less than £50 which were virtually unplayable, but I did some research and found out how to service my basses, and made them all perfectly playable.
I'm no expert by any means, and even now I still google or go on youtube to find out how to do things, and for many years I steered clear of adjusting the truss rod, but once I plucked up the courage, I've never looked back.

You are getting some really sound advice on here, why not just give it a go yourself, and experience the pleasure you get, when you have done a good job of setting up your own bass.

If I can do it, then so can you!

£28? your lucky, a 3 hour rehersal costs [b]£45[/b] where I am, so I would jump at the chance of free rehearsals for 3 gigs a year.

I've been suffering from arthritis in my thumbs for a few years now, and I tried the short-scale route too, but I just could not get on with the sound characteristics that short-scale basses tend to have.

I then tried a Ibanez SR500 and found it perfect, it feels more like playing a guitar, extremely light, balances perfect which makes the reach much shorter than most basses, and has just about the [i]thinnest/slimmest[/i] neck on the planet.

I've now upgraded to a Ibanez SR1200 Premium, which plays and feels the same, but has higher specs than the SR500.

I strongly recommend that you try a Ibanez SR500 (around £250 S/H), as I think you will be surprised just how easily they play, and they sound great too!

You will not pay more for a German made model, you can pick up mint condition Warwicks for little more than £500.
I know from experience as I sold two Corvettes recently, one a 2010 natural ash for £550, and a 2007 bubinga for £500, both in showroom condition.

The second-hand market is the route to take IMO.

I love [b][i]Warwicks[/i][/b] and I love the [b][i]Nords[/i][/b], so I'm a bit biased I suppose, but yes, they sound great!

They come as standard on my [b][i]Ibanez SR 1200 Premium[/i][/b], and I have to say that it's the best sounding, and best playing bass that I've had, and I have had a few over the last few years.

I would say £1,500 is about right, as that is what I paid for it a few years ago.
