lots of interesting replies. i really enjoyed the James Planton bass on 'pitter panther patter'! I will listen to the players various people have name checked. I do appreciate the skills that must be needed to perform the solos, and i never really thought about form and the need for other players to take a back seat for a few bars. In my opinion jazz is not as instantly accessable as many types of music and the nuances and interplay between the musicians takes time and study to appreciate. Cheers Pete

I am pretty new to listening to jazz and i have only a few jazz cd's, miles davis, John Coltrane and a single Paul Chambers cd. I only took an interest in jazz when i took up the bass a few months ago and i really enjoy the stuff i listen to but one thing puts me off, Bass solos! i understand this maybe quite sacrilegious on a site dedicated to bass, but i cant get into them at all. one minute Miles is doing great things with his trumpet and the next thing you know a bass solo pops up and drains the enthusiasm for a great song out of me. It seems like they are put in to punish you for listening to jazz. i now have new respect for the drum solo! Is it just me? Cheers Pete

had the bass a while now and heres what i think. first off the bass is stunning to look at and takes pride of place in my study, i feel lucky to have it tbh. it is balanced perfectly and weighs at most 7 pound i should think, which makes it very comfy to play for long periods without getting tired. the neck is really nice and fast and makes playing easier than any instrument i have had before, its a joy to play. The 4 way switch gives me lots of usable tones to mess about with. its a really versatile bass and i am more than happy with the tones i am getting out of it. it is a beautiful insrtrument and i would recommend Jon to anyone wanting a hand made bass at a really great price. He is a top bloke and his customer service is superb. He made the whole proccess a great experience. Cheers Pete

hey all, been playing bass a fortnight, or 2 weeks to non uk people . played 6 string guitar for 5 or 6 years and decided to buy a bass for home recording. getting strangely drawn to playing it more than my guitars. loving cream, hendrix and old school blues/ blues rock bass lines. currently got a cheap axl roadworn, which i set up and restrung wi flats and its not too bad now. fear i may end up with more than one bass now though as i have noticed that yamaha bb414 basses seem quality for the money.
