  1. Went to Rough Trade in Nottingham because Mrs. Strange wanted an Oceansize EP that was never released on vinyl.

As there were only 1000 available she wanted to get there early to avoid disappointment. We arrived at 7:15 to join the end of the queue which was around the block and back onto the street the shop is on.

It was 12:15 by the time we’d bought the record and left the shop.

I already hate RSD but never again. Ever.

Played mostly in four piece bands so always stood left side of drummer as you face band but I’m now in a five piece band with two guitarists.

Which is the better side to stand and why ?  I see many five piece bands with bassist on right side as you face band

There’s no right or wrong answer and it really doesn’t matter.

Some people may have a reason for standing one side or the other but neither is better than the other.

  3. I’m considering getting a custom bass built. Only a single Jaguar but nowhere does a production model that I like.

I came across Guitar & Bass Build UK but I don’t know much about them. Does anyone have experience with them and their builds?

Alternatively are there any other builders I should be looking at?

  4. Drummer in my old band quit on three or four separate occasions. We (eventually) had him back each time because he was our friend and an incredible drummer. Yes we did trust him. To the point where we joked about him quitting again.

I guess it depends how well you know them and how good they are?

But if you decide to go for US made ones and are near Hertfordshire, hit up these guys:

UK reseller for most of the major brands.  They do temporary moulds so you can try out different brands and models, and deal with the whole process of ordering and deals with any support issues.

Paul at custom IEM company - don’t go anywhere else! He deals in the best.

I’ll soon be getting a set of (most likely) Ultimate Ears UE-6 Pro after Paul was very highly recommended by two of my band members.

  6. Personally it wouldn’t bother me as long as it was just cosmetic and didn’t affect playability.

I’ve had new basses where some paint has chipped off during transit and not sent them back. I did ask for some money off though, which I got.

But that’s just me because I’m not really bothered by things like that. But I also understand that most people would expect a brand new item to be perfect and would ask for a replacement if there were any issues at all.

Got my Baby Sumo in the post today (after paying the carrier £96 in vat and other charges, grrr). I wanted a clean, quiet and punchy back end for my Noble preamp.

I've tried it in the studio through a couple of One10s, and so far it's just the ticket, silent, clear and punchy with no colouration, letting the Noble do its stuff unveiled.  Rehearsal and gig next week, looking forward to trying it out (trusty Elf in reserve in case it all goes tits up).

I’ve been looking at these recently. Just started using a Quad Cortex so I was considering getting rid of my head and using one of these to power a cab instead.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts after gigging it. Or from anyone else who has one.

Ready for some new Grolsch rubber seals. But can't find the bottles anywhere. Do they still exist? (happy to buy someone a couple if i can have the seals...!)

    Fender sell them now.
I also found that they have bottles with the Grolsch type lids in the kitchen section of IKEA. You may sometimes find that a couple seals have ‘fallen off’ the bottles.

  9. Only used two or three times. Still in great condition.

Selling as I bought a Quad Cortex and needed something else to power it.

Comes with all cables and screws for fixing to a pedalboard.

    Happy to post.

  10. Never exactly regretted buying anything but I have bought a few things that I’ve then sold fairly quickly as they turned out they weren’t quite what I wanted.

Just a couple of pedals, mostly, which I lost money on but with them being relatively cheap I don’t regret losing a bit of money. If it was expensive gear I may have felt differently.

Luckily there are several local ones for both my bands and the vast majority of the worthwhile out of town gigs for us are within a 4 hour drive of where I live

I’ve always thought one of the best things about being a musician in Nottingham is where we are in the country. As you said we can get pretty much anywhere in England and Wales within 4 hours at most.

Speaking of Nottingham we seemed to go through a spate of losing long-established venues at one point and I remember things looking fairly dire for a while. It seemed that we only had DHP owned venues for a few years.

But the last few years it seems that a good handful of new venues have opened and seem to be doing well.

As far as I can remember (the last 20 years or so) Nottingham has had a fairly strong and vibrant music scene, it’s just always seemed strange to me that we produce very few big artists.

Before I moved to WI in 1972, I grew up 10 minutes outside of NYC in a New Jersey suburb. After high school  where you would play high school , church and YMCA dances there was nothing.

I can't speak for London, but back in the early 70s there were little  to no gigs in NYC for local bands.

I have friends in NYC who all say there’s almost nowhere to play now, especially for originals bands.

There’s the odd bar gig for cover bands but in terms of actual music venues there are very few left.

They first told me this over 15 years ago and I believe they’ve just gotten fewer and fewer since. Even to the point where younger bands will ask them for advice and their advice is always ‘Get out of the city.’

  13. Is there a reason you need separate signals for ears and FOH? Do you purposely want it to sound different in your ears than it does in the house?

One of my bands is on IEMs and we send the same signal to both.

That would be a simpler setup and you wouldn’t have to worry about phase issues.
