1. Im looking to use it to replace the TRB as my main gigging bass as I wouldn't feel so bad it getting knocks and bumps on the 765A.

How much would you say is a good price for one?

2. I noticed one of these for sale close to me for a decent price and I am very tempted to buy it as a companion for my RBX374 but before I do I would like to get some of your opinions.

As some of you guys know I am a big Yamaha nut and own/owned a number of different models but as I dont know much about the 765A I thought I better ask.

I will be playing a lot of heavy rock, metal, funk and blues which my 374 handles beautifully.

How do these compare in terms of sound, build and feel to the more modern RBXs?

Cheers.

3. Can't say I've had much experience of this round my part. I don't really understand the whole image thing, as long as you sound good in the mix why should it matter?

I think its more how does one wear their instrument and how do they act while playing with that group? That will play a bigger part on the image of the band more than just the look of the instrument.

4. For me it depends on what config the bass is, I prefer active humbuckers to passive ones and passive split coil P or P/J to active ones.

I guess if you want to cover all bases (excuse the pun) would be to play passives but have an outboard preamp to plug into if you do want to start shaping the tone ect.

5. I can highly recommend Yamaha basses as your first bass, they smash way above their price and they have legendary built quality and a great tone, The RBX series or the BB series are really great, if you want a more chunky neck the BB series is what you will want, if you feel a thinner neck with a few extra frets the RBX series are great, I've been playing for years and I still use all of my Yamahas.

You can pick them up dirt cheap second hand on here and even the lower models in the range will last you ages and probably will never feel the need to get rid of it.

Both series also do 5 strings, if you want any more info feel free to pm me and I can go more in depth :)

6. I know a few of you have fitted pre amps for your 414/415s, how different is that to buying a 614/615? I really like the passive sound but I also like the versatility in having an active bass. Any suggestions?

Damn, that blue finish looks better than I thought on the TRB6ii.
Only thing I got tired of with mine is the amber finish on it...Not really to my tastes. Didn't mind it to begin with but oh well, price I pay for an excellent bass.
I do want another one day though and it will be in that finish.

Anyway, today I got a Yamaha TRB1006. Figured as the price was right I'd try one. I mean, narrower spacing has it's benefits in places and the more modern neck profile is welcome. 17mm is still comfortable to slap with to me.
Have to say, not sure why people say these are a poor version. 1st off, it's not really fair to compare them as the specs are different (Spacing, neck profile, body, Korean made etc). I'm quite impressed personally and I've been using a '98 TRB6II for almost 5 years now as my main bass.

Tone is a little darker. Still sharp and aggressive but the mids are different. Action sits 3mm off the frets, just like my TRB6II. Same inlays as the BB's of today as well, which I quite like and do I love the trans red over quilted maple finish.
It's missing the "TRB" motif off of the headstock but I guess that's just to show it's a "lower end" model...If you could call it that.

All in all, I think the 1000 series are great basses in their own right. There's a reason they have a different numerical name. :-P

...And I can't upload pics atm it seems so I shall get back to that, along with my other Yammies. :-)

I've been interested to know how these 1000 series TRBs compare and they sound pretty good to me, how much do they go for S/H? I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to collect TRBs now because I love them that much! My excuse is that I always need a back up... And a backup of a back up ;) I'm also going through the same phase with the BB models as well (Damn you Yamaha stop making good basses!).

Don't trust a word that Ben aka 4StringsFortress says, he knows nothing. Just kidding of course cos I now have his BB414, and its a corker. A wise choice.

+1 Don't eat yellow snow ;)

9. I only ever play Yamaha basses now as they are perfect for what I want and need. Even though I play the TRB, BB and the more expensive RBX models of Yamaha I would have no problems picking up an RBX170 or 270 and using it in a band or gig setting, Infact I may get a 270 as a back up to my RBX374.

You will never go wrong with a Yamaha, enjoy it and good luck on your bass adventure!

I like the TRB5II in this colour, blue and gold always work well =)
I will be in the market for another TRB5II soon to have as a back up and this is the colour I will be hoping to get it in.

11. Totally agree with what everyone has already said, the only option was to walk and its a big shame the drummer and vocalist wont follow suit. Give it enough time (and enough bass players that leave) and im sure it will start to wear thin on them too.

I am very lucky in my band, the guitarists are open to suggestions about their sound and playing, if they are too loud they turn down without a fuss and they are not control freaks.

What gauges are you looking for? They seem to be inexpensive enough that you could purchase two or three different sets, assemble the gauges you desire out of each of the sets, and sell off the rest as singles. Or just contact Strings Direct directly and see if they will package a custom set for you, like bassstringsonline.com does in the USA.
I thought about that and StringsDirect dont do custom gauges as I have asked before. I am currently trying out some Picato nickel strings which seems to be the closest so far. I will get a few Legacy sets and compare them to the Picatos.

13. I am currently going through strings like water in an attempt to find that "perfect" string for me, I have come almighty close with the Legacy nickel strings, I like their sound and tension but they do very limited gauges.

So could anyone tell me if their are strings out there that are very much like the Legacies but with more varied gauges and preferably something that lasts longer than 2 months?

These are the strings im currently looking at:

Picato Nickel Wound
Dunlop Nickel Plated Steel
Daddario XL Nickel Wound
Fender Pure Nickel Wound
Fender Nickel Plated Steel
Elite Player Series Nickel Wound

If anyone could tell me a bit about any of these strings or how they compare that would be great!

Also if anyone has any other suggestions then I am all ears :).

14. So I've been using the Legacy strings for a few weeks now and to be fair I love them! They produce a really nice wet deep tone which is exactly what I'm looking for. Only trouble is they don't have much choice in gauges. I'm currently trying out some Dunlop nickel plated steel strings, they sound and feel very different and I'm still trying to EQ them to stop them sounding so clanky, but they do give a nice mid and low end growl which is what I like. Can anyone suggest strings that are close to the Legacy strings but have more varied gauges?

15. Just strung these to my BB415 and had a play around with them. I almost blew my head off when I first plugged them in as my amp was set to boost the lows and mids of the last strings I was using . I had to turn everything down and start again. The sound is exactly what im looking for, boomy lows and a growly mids with a cheeky little bit of top end just to cut through. I agree that they do sound dull without the amp being turned on but they more than make up for that when you do switch it on.

I went for the light 5 string set (40,60,80,100,120) because I find fatter strings to be a bit to floppy ;). They feel great, need to get used to the lower tension but that's something I will get used to soon enough.

Overall very good first impressions, I need to string them to my TRB 5 and then take them to my next band practice to really give them a going over which I am looking forward to greatly!

I heard a rumour that Lagacy strings are made by Rotosound. I did try a set but didn't like them. I prefer the zing myself, maybe someome here can help.

Yea the Legacy strings are good quality strings but are very limited in their gauges, the 5 string sets only comes in at .45.65.85.105.130. I like to use a lighter gauge more like 40-120 so iv got hold of some Dunlop nickels in that gauge to give a go =).

Thanks to everyone who has posted in this thread! I will go on and try Dunlop strings.
I've just talked to Enrico from W&T, and his opinion on whether the Dunlop strings die fast was "not at all". But well, this is just his opinion, I'd go on and check myself!
I guess if your used to DR Sunbeams the Dunlops might seem to die quicker but otherwise from what Ive been told they do last a while compared to the other makes.

Cool man thanks yea I live in Cardiff so not far to post or I might even pop over there myself. Do they supply 5 string sets too?

19. This review was the decider for me to try out the dunlops to (in the same gauge). I bought a couple of sets for £16 each off eBay which seems pretty cheap as normally they go for about (correct me if I'm wrong) £23/£25 for 5 string sets. Looking forward to trying these out!

What is the life on these? I've only used legacy nickels so far and they are good but are needing changing every 2 months or so.
