Totally different from the last track I posted, which will be a relief to some, obviously......

Shame on you, building my hopes up like that..! For a few seconds I thought I was to get something reasonably good to listen to. Serves me right, I suppose. I'd genuinely like to come across a fresh track which could inspire a tiny spark of what I heard 'back then'. Bl**dy old age; prhaps those magic tones are now those that I can't here (drowned by tinitus...)..? Sorry, lad, but I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the insistant bass riff, another drum track I'm glad not to be associated with, a monochordal pale Manson droning on about who knows what, sporadic excited girly samples trying to liven up a rather (literally...) dead-beat rhythm.
So, I didn't like it that much (or had you guessed..?). Please don't take umbrage; you did ask for opinions, and I'm quite used to being out of line (I don't do it on purpose, honestly; I'd love to love some pop stuff, just never come across any that hold a candle to Fairport Convention, or Grateful Dead, or Joni Mitchell, or ........).
OK, I'll try the next one, just to please you, but it'd better be darned good, or you'll have lost another (potential...) fan.
(Damn..! Been dribbling on the keyboard again... Damned old age...)

2. Perhaps it's a generation thing..? I didn't think much of 'Popcorn', either, but the world thought otherwise, apparently. I know you won't, but I'll politely decline your request for doing the drums 'live'. No, it's not what you suggested, perhaps, but it certainly isn't my 'cup of tea'. Sorry, but I'm old; next... (...although my thoughts go out to you, spending all that time with a headset going over it for so long. What did you say..? Only 20 minutes..? Still too long...)
Just my fuddy tuppence worth, of course, and you did ask..!
Respect.

3. A splendid thread to follow, this is BC at it's best, perhaps..? Well done to all involved, and looking forward to the reviews which must surely follow...

I certainly can't claim to be responsable for Rotosound's continued success; I use the TruBass Black Nylons (RS88M...) on a Hofner Verithin bass, and I'm afraid to say that they last literally years. The very same sound from new to eternity. One has to like that solid 'thump', of course (not for slapping..!). Excellent product, I shall certainly not switch to any other (on that bass, at least...). No comfort to Rotosound, however. I suppose that every little helps, though..?
Sorry, Jason; your product is too good, it seems. Please don't change them.

4. Sorry, folks, but this is going to be boring...
Only a small affair (a couple of switch plates...), but easy to negotiate (offer...accepted...), easy payment (PayPal...), excellent packaging and fast delivery to France (although that's not really Jack's doing...). I had neglected to give my full name; it got delivered just the same. A pleasure, sir; recommended.
Many thanks...

5. Good evening, thebrig...

It seems that your main problem is the lack of experience in shaping the sound of your gear to obtain what you desire. Although there is a fair bit of good advice in the replies above, I suspect that a helping hand (or ear...) may be more efficient, in your case. Do you have a bass-playing chum who could guide you..? If not is there anyone reasonably local to Herts on this forum who could devote an evening or two to go through the motions (I'd love to help, but I'm in France..!).
If no-one here could volunteer, maybe a local music shop could recommend a player..?
Essentially, one needs to have a starting point (normally everything 'flat', then listen...), and adjust to fit the bill. One has to have had some experience to be able to identify what's 'missing' (or too much...), but once the ears have been 'locked in' to the essential points, it's not that hard (assuming decent gear, perhaps...).
It doesn't sound as if the playing is any problem to you (congratulations..!); simply being able to use the knobs and buttons to adapt the sound to the event, be it at home, pub, hall or open air.
I woundn't want to presume too much, but I would have thought that a knowledgable BC'er not far from you could be worth a cuppa (or pint...)?
Any takers, folks..?

6. ...so it will soon be 'NLD', huh..? (New Lead Day...). :)

Sounds like your soldering skills need a little help. Get a techie chum to look it over..? Could also be that the cable has an open circuit; cutting it back a bit might save it.
Good luck, anyway...

7. Good evening, Tripehound (charming moniker..!)...

If you'd care to post a few decent pics here...

...you're sure to get a few ID indications. If you could look at the back of the pots, there's very often a 3-number date code (at least, on earlier models...), which might help.
Hofners have a wonderful system of mixing and matching features over time, so there is often some 'fuzziness' over specific dates, but there are nevertheless several tell-tale indications (type and length of tailpiece, size of control plate, type of tuners and knobs etc; the list is long...).
They'll sort you out, I'm pretty sure.
Hope this helps...

8.
Okay, I know I might be barking up the wrong tree here...
Good afternoon, kristinaelias...

I've no experience with this amp; it looks good, but I would think your guitars would profit more from it than a bass. You probably won't 'break' it, but I'm not sure that it'll do what you want for bass (depending, of course, on what you want as a 'bass' sound...).
For bass, it's not the same as guitar (at least, for me...). The idea with bass is to have ton's of 'headroom', so that it stays clean, even at high power. Valve amps give this, but, imho, only biggun's. I have a 50w Fender Bassman, into 2x15, which does the job at home. For stage, it's a 200w Hiwatt head. We're out of 'home' use here. For guitar, the 'valve' overdriven sound is fine, but for bass, it's not easy to crank into those tones without a big rig. A small amp will not give that same effect.
For home use, and a clean sound, a Peavey, or Hartke solid state would give a better tone, I think; if you want or need overdrive or disto, go to pedals.
Just my tuppence worth, others will doubtless contradict.
Hope this helps...

9. Most of this sounds familiar...

Gramaphone, at first (elliptical speaker...).
A couple of Linear 30w valve amps from Tottenham Court Road (great amps, I'd like another...).
Home-made trannie amp (4x2N3055; 100w..!), home-made 4x12 (Fane 'Pop' speakers...). I didn't know about cab dimensions, so I 'guessed' at 36" square. Slightly cumbersome is an understatement. Covered it, and the head, with turquoise vinyl. Ugh..! What was I thinking of..?
Hiwatt DR504, into 2 Marshall 2x12 cabs. Very nice.
Hiwatt DR203 (200w PA amp, 4xKT88...) into 4xHiwatt PA cabs (never seen any like 'em, since...). Moved air... After moving to France, the amp got busted (sad story...), and I sold/swapped the cabs. Silly move.
I then acquired a Fender Bassman Export 50w, with it's 2x15 cab. My basic rig, now (for guitar and/or bass...)
My son has taken over the bass role now (I'm a drummer, really...), and used at first a Peavey 130w PA head, then a Hartke 3500 into an Ampeg 4x10. We now have another DR203, into the same cab. Moves air; really needs another 4x10...

That's no party trick..! It ain't a party without your Chapman stick. :)
