1.
Sounds like the first band were probably actually jazz, as Marcus certainly isn't.
But can't Jazz can take on many formats? (Trad. Jazz, Jazz Funk, dixieland, etc etc)
Whilst I agree that Marcus is in the funky end of Jazz, my original point was that personally, I struggle with whatever style you would call this 'freestyle jazz'.

To my ears, it just comes out as noise. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that but I look at other people listening and nodding to the music and wonder what they are hearing?

  2.
So did anyone see this gig? How was it?

    Neil.
OK, I'll try to be as objective as possible as I am a big fan of MM but I thought it was absolutely fantastic. :)

He had some very talented youngsters with him and they all gave a more modern update on (IMHO) the 80's sounding Tutu album. Plus they did a couple of MM tracks and others.
Good venue, good sound and a great performance. I wanted to go and see it again.

BTW, The only downside for me was the support act - Gary Husband (Level 42 drummer) and his jazz quartet 'Drive'. As much as I try to understand this type of jazz music (think The Fast Show's Jazz Club...nice!), I just can't get it. The DB player was playing his heart out but it did nothing for me.I knew I was in trouble when the sax player in Drive stopped playing and just closed his eyes.......... There was another support act on the public stage beforehand and they were doing the same improv. style jazz. I just struggled to see the link between what all the individuals were all playing.

  3.
Thanks to Jim (Floyd Pepper) for coming over to the college and donating us some bits of kit! We now have an Ibanez Soundwave bass guitar and Ibanez practise amp to add to our music department. Cheers Jim!

Attached is a pic of a student rocking out on the bass :)
Great pic Ben. Better to be used than sitting in my loft!
    Best of luck

  4.
First one - wouldn't touch. Overpriced

    Third one, nice but £499?

Last one - nice but I reckon you could walk into a shop and get one for that(ish) with some negotiation.

Second one all the way for me if I could get it for £6-650.
I had a look at them all before reading the replies so far and my thoughts were exactly the same as MTB.

  5. I bought OBBM's DJ4 with the John East Retro kit and it is now my main gigging bass because it is so versatile. I use it in a covers band and it does the job very well.
I did try a BG and and DD but decided to stay with Fender for the Precision sound.

  6. Sorry to possibly disappoint but personally, I thought it was a sad state of affairs. I hadn't been for a couple of years and it was very visible to see how this show is dying. The hall could not be filled, empty stands from late pull outs, no appreance from advertised companies ( Bass Merchant and Bass Direct - I'm not blaming these guys as they probably had the foresight to see what was coming and held on to their hard earned cash).
I spoke with a couple of the people on the stands who also pointed out the increased width of the aisles to spread the stands out but also stopped passing trade.
Apart from a couple of good drum clinics, we walked away from it feeling quite jaded about the whole thing. I assume the London Excel show is better?

  7. Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help.
Unless I'm going mad (always possible) but I seem to remember reading a thread on BC asking for musical instrument donations for a charity / club
After a few searches on the site, I can't seem to find it now.
If you know what I'm talking about or if you know of anything suitable, can you drop me a line.
    Thanks,
    James

Just after I sent this mail, I found the original thread !

  8. Looks like this is sold.
As the original owner of this bass Jim I think this is criminally underpriced. I've seen these go for up to £600 on EBay & that's without the ashtrays and the (admittedly vulgar) case! Priced to sell quickly.

On the plus side it looks like you are keeping on top of those autumn leaves in the garden which is encouraging. Do you shampoo those cream carpets? It's a great colour but you really have to make sure guests wipe there feet as they come in or you have a whole bucket load of trouble!
Many thanks for the concern of my carpet Tim and yes, the leaves are under control which is about the only thing that is!
No I guess, I bought one in natural and then sent to my luthier for a refinish in nitro sonic blue. I'll put a picture if the seller don't mind.
No probs.

  9. The P bass reduction programme continues with this CIJ Fender Sting Signature Bass based on a '53 Fender Bass.
I bought this in early 2008 and I've checked the serial number which states the manufacture of it between 99-02.
It is in very good condition with only a very small scratch and a small chip near the jack on the body. (more photos can be supplied).
Great 2T sunburst finish and personally, I think these CIJ's are excellent quality for the money.

Price is £350. I'll also provide an old hardcase with it. I'm based near J13 M25.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  10. Hi,

I've decided to thin down my collection of P basses and so, the bass that actually got me into the Precision sound is up for grabs. It's a '54 RI CIJ in the unmissable Blue Flower finish which I have had since July 2008. Previous to that it belonged to our fellow basschatter Burritobass who has informed me that it was purchased new towards the end of 2004/early 2005. I used it for a handful of gigs in 08 but its then been stored at home since then. All original stock parts and a great bass to play with a great maple neck.

It is in excellent condition (I can't find a mark on it) and comes with a Rockcase Hard case finished in an interesting Snake skin finish. (you're not going to be overlooked with this combination!)

I've attached a couple of quick pics so that you get the idea but I will add some more tomorrow once daylight hits us again.

Price is £350.00. I always prefer not to post and I'm based near J13 M25.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  11.
Only that it's probably fairly well made and will do the job fine but a Les paul shaped bass shouldn't be allowed.
Not even one that looks as good as this?

  12. I'm not sure where you are based but personally I'd invest in some time and a train ticket to The Gallery (or other suitably equipped shop) and spend some time there getting an idea of what feels and sounds good to you.
You have a good budget and it might surprise you with what you end up with:)

As for me, and after a bit of experimenting, I'm more than happy with my Lakland DJ4. Not the most expensive Jazz I've ever owned but the right one for me.
    Cheers, FP
