Wow, this thread is addictive! I felt compelled to write my own history so here goes, in roughly chronological order:
Hohner Rockwood - My first bass. I was desparate not to have a retro fender copy for my first guitar and this fiited the bill: cheap, contemporary, and black! Was pretty s**t in hindsight.
Hohner headless (Steinberger licensed) - The one with the body, not the cricket bat. A revelation compared to the Rockwood - slim neck, low action. Strings cripplingly expensive when you're a kid.
Encore E83 - bought so I could use the bits for a GCSE project. Reasseambled afterwards and sold on.
Fender Precision Lyte - my first 'proper' guitar. Still have this one - played my first proper gig with this.
Aria pro II 5-String - Chopped the headless in for this. Great neck, weak tone, floppy B. Started gigging and needed a backup 4, so chopped this in for:
Vester 'The Argus' bass - Looked awesome: shaped like a futuristic, curvy rikky, active p/us, gold hardware. Barely played it.
Fender BG29 Acoustic - Basic electro with fishman pickup/pre, 32" scale. Sounded nice in the shop. Same guitar available branded Tanglewood, not Fender's finest hour. Got it cheap and still have it though.
Vigier Passion III 6-String Custom - My current main squeeze. Bought on a whim 2nd hand at a bargain price (wanted a 5 for low stuff), was a bit beat up when I got it and has picked up a few more knocks along the way. I've never played anything else with such awesome midrange gnar. Gets props wherever I go. More bass than I'll ever need.
Tokai Hardpuncher P-bass copy - A recent one (2000s)- swapped the Vester for this as I wanted to move it on. Very solid bass. A bit too cream for my tastes.
Spector Q6 Pro - Traded the Tokai back to its owner (Hi Rob!) for this - was gigging the Vigier by then so a backup 6 seemed like a good idea. Neck like a tree trunk, controls not to my taste (prefer blend over 2xvol) - solid and capable guitar, but would probably be the first up against the wall.
AXL Player Jazz fretless - An impulse buy. Started life destined to be a fretted model but got polyfilla instead of fret wire. Despite the 'designed by EMG' pickups it's had an intermittent signal problem from day one. I'll get round to sorting it at some point...
Also from the cupboard:
Jackson Performer Series Rhoads - Bought off a mate, lent to another mate, didn't look after it, was never the same Took cash instead of having it back.
Jackson Performer Series Kelly - Bought off the first mate, looks sexy in flame green It was his 18th birthday present from his mum!!
Aria short-scale bass - a birthday present to the wife - she liked the idea of learning more than the practice of learning. Great toy for noodling on though!
All ths talk of basses - I have no space and no cash, but can feel the GAS creeping up. Oh dear...
