1. Im awaiting delivery of a bass from America and my tracking number on the usps site states it's awaiting customs clearance over here.
Any way I can find the depot the bass is at early so I can go collect it?

Were it not for already having (one of?) the first in the country. Indeed, the very one that was used for - and photographed in - the Guitar Magazine review. Unmodded. Cowboy. :)

And it's fabulous. Bridge, pickup, everything. And what a neck!

What I prefer about yours tho', is that gorgeous 2-tone finish... and a nice grain. Beautiful. If only I could afford another!

Good luck with the sale.

Good luck with the sale mate.

Just last weekend I sold by 51-RI to a fellow BC'er who appreciated the SCPB-3 pickup and Deluxe 4 saddle bridge as upgrades (and the originals were also included). He wanted the traditional P-bass sound, but on playing mine, immediately said "that's a really beefy tone; I'm sold".

Tip to anyone thinking of interfering in a sale by injecting their own subjective opinion...if you've nothing good to say, say nothing.

Cheers CB, my thoughts exactly.

But back to the organ grinder (trying to flog this bad boy)

For the purists among us £450 with the original bridge and pickup fitted.

Or £500 with the Bare Knuckle pickup and HMV bridge fitted, and the originals thrown in.

Either way it's a beauty

Well.... without trying to hijack the thread....

If I wanted a bass that didn't sound like a thin 'ol '50's P Bass.... I wouldn't buy a thin sounding '50's P Bass in the first place.

Conversely, if I wanted a bass that sounded like a 50's P Bass, I'd wouln't buy one that'd been modded not to sound like one.

These aren't upgrades, they're modifications.

Carry on.
Whoa there cowboy!
I take it you don't wanna buy it then

I'm not too sure where this thin rep has sprung from either, I certainly never mentioned it.
I just found the original pickup a little too 'middy' if that makes sense, so I tried a new pickup, and would you believe it, I quite liked it.
And with regards to the bridge, who wouldn't want more adjustability and sustain?

And what can I say, I've always been a sucker for ashtray covers

And just to be clear, for a mere £500 you'll also get the original Fender two saddle bridge and pickup too.

Happy Days B)

6. I'd take £450 with the original pickup and bridge installed as I could probably sell the others ones on.
But for the extra £50 it's a pretty good price, and you could flog on what you don't wanna keep. :D

Cheers

7. For sale is my stunning Fender 51 Reissue Precision Bass in gorgeous 2-tone sunburst finish (Crafted in Japan)

The bass is immaculate in A1, perfect condition and I cannot find a mark on her.
It's a really cool looking retro bass and has tons of vibe with it's slab body, single coil pickup and Tele style headstock.
I picked her up earlier in the year in a trade from a fellow Baschatter, and made several improvements once I got her.

I replaced the pickup with a Bare Knuckle 52 Stagger P as I found the original a little too 'Honky'.

I also replaced the bridge with a new Fender High Mass Vintage bridge, like the ones found on the new American Standard series.
These bridges are a drop in 3-bolt replacement and allow you to either string through-body or top load through the bridge. They also improve the sustain and allow greater adjustments.

I also added the Fender pickup and bridge chrome covers and a single hole thumbrest to complete the look.

All the work was carried out by Martin Clarke's guitars, along with a full set-up, fret dress and new set of D'Adarrio round wound strings, so she plays as good as she looks.

I do still have both the original pickup and bridge which will be included in the sale, and the bass will come supplied in a quality padded gig bag (Warwick Rock Bag).
According to the Fender site this bass was manufactured in 2007-2008 (Crafted in Japan S + 6 digit serial number).

I'm after £500 for the bass collected from North London, which I think is a fair price considering the guitar's condition and the extra parts I've added. I'm also happy to post the guitar via courier at the buyers expense.

8. Hi Tenty

I used to have the HA3500 with the 2.5XL (a 2x10 with a 5"tweeter) and 115XL cabs. It was an excellent rig and I really regret moving it on.
Looking back on all the heads I've gone through since, I'd definitely rate the HA3500 as a great head, it's really loud and powerful even compared to heads with higher wattage ratings.

I've now got a pair of the Hydrive 4x10 cabs which I think are excellent cabs. Plus they're propably the most manageable 4x10's I've ever come across.

In answer to your question, yes I'd definitely keep the head over the cabs. The 4.5XL would be a really great choice, but I'd prefer the Hydrive 4x10, and if you shop around there probably isn't much difference in price between the two cabs.
Plus looking at the bigger picture, a few years down the line you may wanna swap the head for one of the Hartke LH models, which is all more recent gear than the HA heads or XL cabs.

Either way, if you went for a 4.5XL or a Hydrive 410, it will be a great rig with your head.
Also check out www.thomann.de they usually have pretty good prices on Hartke gear with free delivery. I got my Hydrive cabs from them for quite a bit cheaper than online stores over here were doing them for.

So, it`s a German instrument company, the bass is built in China and it has a Union Jack painted on it?

Sounds about right!

Quick question. Has any pro other than Macca or guys in tribute bands ever been seen using one of these?

Damon Minchella from Ocean Colour Scene used one now and again. Although he pretty much stuck to his 70's Jazz Bass live.
He's using one here in the video for The Circle:

And Paul Weller used one a fair bit during the Wild Wood sessions.
Here's a recent pic of him holding one:

10. Have you considered any of the Hartke range.

The LH500 (or the 1000!) head and the HX410 Hydrive cab would be a great gigging rig and is really good value too, the whole rig would only be £725 on Thomann. The head can be rack mounted and the cab is pretty lightweight and it comes on wheels so you won't need a trolley.

The only concern with running a 4x10 plus a 2x10 is that the power will be split between each cab, so you'll be constantly running the 2x10 a lot harder than a 4x10. This may never be an issue but something to consider.

Ashdown do have a lot of choice in their range, but I've had a few Ashdown Rigs over the years and they don't come close to the Hartke rig in my experiance.

11. Cheers for all the suggestions guys.

Just in case anyone else is looking to do the same, I picked up one of the new Fender High Mass Vintage bridges that are fitted to the newer American Standard Basses.
Picked one up off ebay from America for under £50 delivered.

It's a great bridge that has a lot more 'meat' to it, it's 3 hole mounting and lets you load the strings through the body or through the top of the bridge. And it fits under the chrome cover easily.

A great drop in replacement for this bass, highly recommended. Although you will have to set your bass up again once fitted as they bass plate is quite a bit thicker than the original.

12. Hi all

I'm due to recieve a Fender 51 RI P Bass at the end of the week that I picked up in a trade.
I'm looking to replace the bridge for a 4 saddle model to get better intonation.
It will still have to be string through body and 3 hole mount as I don't want to be drilling any extra holes. I'm also looking to put the chrome bridge cover on too, so it must fit under there.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
