1. Madam Butterfly. Off to my first ever opera at the ROH tomorrow night. It's only taken me 50+ years to get round to it ...
2. I think that there's an assumption that nurdling on a bass needs to be done in a band/gig context. My father played the piano but no one suggested he should look for a keyboard gig. Ditto friends who like to strum their acoustic guitars. When I told a (bass playing, gigging) friend that I was thinking of committing(*) bass, his first reaction was that I should get out and gig as soon as I could tell one end from the other. So piano, guitar, fine to play by yourself. Bass, not so much? Where do other instruments fall in this spectrum I wonder? (*) I'd almost certainly be arrested for crimes against music should I try to play the bass in public!
3. I rebuilt a BB300 with some Gotoh hardware including a 201. I know, hardware more expensive than the donor bass. But the sustain is bonkers. I swear I plucked a string one night in passing and it was still humming the next day! Maybe ....
4. Saw this Yammie BB3000 re-issue at Classic and Cool Guitars when browsing the other day. Much want! Some bu**er ... , er, Baggins on here must have bought this. Hand it over. My precioussssss ...
5. Not relevant to the OP, but maybe of use to others reading this thread for guidance. If you have 2/3/4 screws on the tuner, drill one pilot hole, mount the tuner, screw it down and then drill the remaining holes using the tuner screw holes as a guide. If you try to pre-drill all the pilot holes, the chances of one more more being fractions of a mm out are much greater. That in turn puts stress on the small screws as you try to force them in, which is an excellent way to shear off the heads. True story! Happened to [s]me[/s] a daft muppet of my ...er .. acquaintance last week.
6. I got an e-mail last nigh apologising for the website going tits up in the last few minutes. But having watched some of the, er, robust bidding leading up to the crash, the outage may have saved people from themselves. Re: reserves. I've no idea why, if you have a reserve on a lot, that is not indicated as the first minimum bid on the item. I was able to note the reserve of the couple of lots I was interested in by speaking to one of the auction helpers at the site on Saturday. FWIW: [All TE gear] 1518C (£90), 1028H (£90), AH600-7 (£230), AH600-12 (£250). I guess auctions to be re-run may be those which extended under the 10 minute rule, where that extension overlapped with the outage. For instance, my winning bid on the AH600-12 wasn't challenged after I placed it on Monday evening, so I guess that is why my winning bid stands? Anyhoo, all paid up and off to collect it this morning!
7. I also see Peavey have put up some lots on t'Bay today. P.S. My mistake on the "internet surcharge" .. this was just pulling the Bidspotter fee into a line item.
8. My invoice arrived last night. On top of the anticipated buyers premium/bidspotter fee/VAT etc. is a line item for "internet surcharge". Now I've scanned the terms of sale pages again and I can't find any reference to this charge. Granted it's only a tenner, but I'm inclined to phone someone up and have a row about sharp practises. A tenner added to all 1300-odd lots is a nice earner....
9. Hello there! My first post after lurking here for a couple of months ... I had a look around on Saturday. As stated above some of the low lot numbers had signs of gigging. Most of the cabs were in good order but some of the amps were a bit tatty. I checked out a number of cabs I was interested in with a multimeter and all tested OK. The cabs and amps from the demo room (later lots) looked very tidy. And there were one or two in the mid lots that were "new in box" (cables/covers etc.) but had been removed from their boxes for auction display. Watching some lots close this morning, there was some real "buyer's fever" going on. I saw 1028H and 1018C cabs going for more than you can buy them new (old stock) on Amazon, when you factor in hammer tax and VAT... I asked on Saturday what will happen to lots that did not meet their reserve. They will be re-auctioned. Anyooo ... I'm happy. I picked up an AH600-12 for around £450 all in. Maybe a tad more than I wanted to spend, but it was in the demo room and very clean.
