Haha, I'm quite the opposite to a lot of people here. I'm a big, big fan of The XX. I love their music and only wish I could write like them. Jamie XX, the guy on keys/samples/drums/etc etc is one very talented man and when i saw them live the first time, I was really surprised they could pulled off what they do live, due to the amount of production on the albums. I thought their performance at Glasto was exactly expected of them and I didn't feel they disappointed. I totally 'get' their music and I really enjoy it. They're not The Rolling Stones, and they're not in your face exciting but I feel their music is honest and they're not trying to be anything that they're not.
Needs a 'Guess the weight competition'.
I can tell you how much weight I gained after eating the lot of it!

Some absolutely lovely lady, a while ago, made this full size Musicman Stingray V Birthday cake for me a while back. I thought I'd share a few pics of it's beauty with you guys. I hope you appreciate em.
People visit forums for different reasons. I don't think the compositions section is particularly interesting.
You're right. People do visit forums for different reasons, but many people don't lurk in the recording forum too often so wouldn't know of the composition competition and this thread is simply letting people know it's there, should they want to check it out. If not, simply move on.
There have been various discussions on this subject over the years, and the final accord seems to be be in favour of a 'free access' site. I would suggest, however, that those folks (myself included, as it happens...) who would be prepared to pay a membership fee, pay anyway, thus providing the (individually modest, but finally quite a decent...) amount that a membership fee would provide. Win win, perhaps..? New members can stroll in, old hands can, on a voluntary basis, aliment the coffers with donations as and when they wish, paying what they esteem BC to be worth to them. Any reasoning against, anyone..?
This is the most amount of sense I've read on the subject. There has been far too much bickering on the subject of late. Well said that man. Now, a mod should lock this topic before it has 19 pages of bickering kids within 3 days!

I'm not sure about a membership. I'd have no problem paying a one off fiver myself, but I think it'd put off new members big time. I think the reason we have such a large, great community is that it's FREE. It would put off FAR too many people and the community would reduce enormously I think. It would be a shame. Definitely no membership fee.

I should add, I know 4 piece bands that go out for £1,600. I even know a band that aren't far off £2,000 - A 9 piece but wow! £2,000!
-
It's not two tone. You can get it in gold or blue. The gold is fugly though.

Hike your fee. We go out for £1,200. Hike your fee. We play pop/rock repertoire but more the pop side of rock. When people book a band, they should know exactly what you do and exactly what they want. If they want YOUR band, they'll pay £1,000 for it. Trust me. When people book things for weddings, they generally expect everything to cost around £1,000 I'd say. Hike your fee. And yeah, we only do pubs for £200. We can't find pubs that'll give us any more than that. We're so damn booked up with weddings these days that we have no time for pub gigs but try to do it once every few months just so people can come hear us for wedding bookings. Hike your fee.

I'm definitely going to apply to ships at the end of the summer. After the wedding season is done, I want a big change. Nothing like sailing the sea when all you've known is land for a big change. There's cash on ships too.

I have a Volvo V50. Cracking car, plenty room, plenty zoom too.

Chipped the paintwork on my bass! F***!
AndyBob09 replied to SevenSeas's topic in General Discussion
Wrap your bass in cotton wool and don't play it again. This is the only sure fire way of keeping your bass pristine. I'm in the "workhorse" camp - And you'll find no bigger, sturdier workhorse than a Stingray. Get over your ding, go out, gig it. If you ding it again, that kinda stuff happens. But hey, at least it shows you've used it and it works for you rather than it's hung on your wall as an attractive ornament. -
You've all been really helpful and I hadn't even considered "fuzz" as something that even really existed. Having watched a few videos online, I've come to like the MXR fuzz deluxe but I'm gonna go to a music shop and try out different pedals for myself and see what I like. Cheers!

I feel bad at my post now. I've only just read in to how people are trying to play with no strings and tying knots in them and what not. I didn't realise this happened in the world. Sorry guys! I genuinely feel bad now - And rest assured when I buy my next set (in around 6 months!), I'll endeavour to pass them on.
-
Thanks for the input so far. I like the bass sound on this. Around 1:32 is where I can hear that nice fuzzy sound I like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1R64-ZWVoM

Hey all, I'm sorry if this has been brought up before. I've searched around but can't find exactly what I'm looking for. I'm a long time bass player but never been in to pedals but am looking in to them to get different sounds. The first thing I'm after is looking to add an overdriven/distorted sound but not sure if it's overdrive or distortion I'm looking for. I want to add warm fuzz to my sound, nothing too too harsh sounding which really pulls the high overtones out. Is what I've described "overdrive"? Sorry being an utter noob! Cheers!

I noticed Janek Gwizdala doing this - And it's all fair and well to see someone that changes his strings every 3 days doing this but I play til my tone is utterly horrible THEN change them. I'd feel I was doing someone a disservice by passing them on my old strings.

3 Things That Inspired You To Play Bass?
AndyBob09 replied to Chiliwailer's topic in General Discussion
1) I wasn't allowed a drum kit (like OP) 2) All my friends played guitar. I figured I'd be more likely to be in a band with a bass. 3) Flea. (Not any more, thankfully.) -
That's great. Glad you got it sorted. I did that years and years ago. I got in to a panic over how I didn't have anything coming out of my amp - Then realised the lead was in the wrong bloody socket!

Eventful. We played a silver wedding anniversary and and 23:45 our singer passed out. We're just glad she did it in the last 15 minutes. We just heard her stop singing and looked round and she was in a heap on the floor. Luckily, the do we were playing at was filled with paramedics and nurses so that always helped. Lovely couple and very understanding.

In my most humble opinion, that neck pickup sounds utter gash. As well, I use the pickups as a thumb anchor, and believe a lot of tone comes from this too, and it's a place that I'm comfortable with my thumb being and I'm always used to it being there. If you're forever sliding the pickups up and down, you'll never be in a comfortable position. Want different tones for different things in the studio? Take two basses along. The idea behind it reminds me of the Line 6 Variax bass. You just have to look around to see how popular that is ...

... Or maybe I'm not proactive enough about going out and finding proactive people who also want to make good music.

That works hard. My Facebook feed this week has been filled with a mate's band who are currently supporting Megadeth on their UK tour, a covers band who have just been to Amsterdam for a few gigs and numerous people playing every sort of gig and rehearsal. - I know none of these things come overnight and only with hard work. I'm sick of seeing bands working their arses off and then look at my originals band, where no1 does anything, ever (even rehearse!) - A quarter of this is me too but why should I make an effort when the other three don't give a monkey's arse? My wedding and function band has a manager (who is also our drummer), who is paid £154 every time we get a wedding booking on top a player's fee but I'm not even sure he is proactive ENOUGH in getting us gigs - We played more weddings last year than we did this year. However, the weddings we played last year, he was only paid something like £80 per wedding booking - Meaning he'd have to book more gigs to get paid more. I just want to get out and have a good play and work hard.
