  1. Getting close now. I’ve done the manual (barring any late feature additions/changes).

Heading to hospital for a really horrid operation tomorrow and all being well I should be out the same day. Will be signed off work for a couple of weeks to recover so hopefully, if I can sit up and move around, I’ll try and get some clips done of some of the new patches I’ve been working on.

Done some quite cool stuff using the new split feature so that playing lightly gets bass only; digging in harder brings in the synth with a long release time so you can play softly over the top of it again without having to use a sustain pedal. This also has the bonus that it continues to feed the delay engine so you can get some really nice backgrounds. (Really hope the next hardware integration adds a stereo out!)

The First thing that appears is 3.03 on the display. Sorry, I'm not very good with this pedal!

That’s an older firmware, if you have the means to do so, I’d recommend updating to the latest version (3.61). There were some tasty upgrades added since the version you’re running. The accompanying v3.60 editor is also massively improved with an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface for patch management.

are there no UK distributers - like Bass Direct or someone?

No. Panda asked me if I want to do it but it’s too much paperwork for my tastes. I did suggest a few established places to them to try to enlist but they haven’t followed up as far as I know.

Is the price not dependant on the company of the payment methods conversion rate when purchased?

HMRC fixes import rates and it is they who charge tax. Currency conversion rates from HMRC are fixed per calendar month and published in advance.  All that may vary slightly is the admin charge from the delivery company for paying the taxes on your behalf. Royal Mail charges £12 (or £18, I can’t remember) for lower value items and £36 for higher value items.

This is where you need to look for import exchange rates:

So what's the cost of a new FI Mk4 going to be delivered to our door with taxes, import duties etc. added on?

Taxes will be approximately 22.5% + £12 admin fee. Price in GBP is dependent upon what the monthly HMRC EUR-to-GBP conversion rate is when purchased.

But wasn't that always the case on new gear? My point is that hasn't changed, we've always had to pay VAT on new kit whether from home or abroad - shouldn't be a surprise?

No. EU sales didn’t used to have VAT charged separately (they were the same as buying from the UK until the withdrawal rules kicked in). It’s very different now. (Buying from outside of Europe is the same as it always was.)

Has that changed for new bits of kit compared to what it was before? (I'm aware there is now VAT to pay on used kit).

New, old, doesn’t matter; you buy something over £15 in value from abroad and you get charged on it. It’s even worse sometimes: I returned a tiny USB keyboard receiver to someone who’d accidentally left it plugged into a bit of gear he sent me and he got charged when it got back to Denmark!

Bah! I only use mine for Quatschmacher patches!

The new stuff planned is the most intriguing bit to me. I will keep an eye on development...

Well, I’ll certainly be making and sharing some sync patches, so if you want those then you’ll have to get the new one.

I dont know what any of this means.

I do know that the FI is my all time favourite pedal and i recommend it to bassists often

As a pedal enthusiast and big fan of the FI, im not seeing anything that makes me think i need this upgrade. Am i wrong? Am i missing some killer app in the update that will make it worth buying a new one?

Having wider control over the 9 onboard parameters. Detent on the parameter dial. Increased note detection sensitivity, faster tracking, option to eliminate the pitch blip, oscillator sync sounds, octave transposition via MIDI, better sound quality, then all the new stuff that’s planned for the future. There’s plenty to make upgrading worthwhile if it’s a heavy-use pedal.

I won’t likely be using my FI I any more and am planning to loan it to someone who doesn’t have one.

It's an interesting one though. How many of the current "unnecessarily" large cases does Andras have to get through (and frankly how much do they cost apiece, I'm guessing they can't be that much?)

Any reason why he can't offer a more compact housing once he's through the current stock of outsize cases? Markbass did pretty much exactly that with their "Supersynth".

No idea, you’d have to ask him.

I guess with limited resources, money is better spent on feature upgrades. It seems they don’t have any problems selling them as is so there isn’t a huge incentive to change it.

Perhaps if all the people who wanted a small-housing version were to band together and go to him with a firm commitment to buy one, there’d be a way, much like the crowd-funded initial release.

it does, one that won't fit on my current pedalboard!

I find that without a pedalboard I never have problems fitting pedals; I have the entire floor space. 😆

Fair point though, it’s on the large size, I think I managed it and five other pedals on my Aclam S1 board.

Would the internals still fit in a Future Compact case?

Yes, they should. Haven’t checked for definite but I believe the boards are exactly the same size as before, there were just a few component changes.
