Yeah I just had a look at your list. Tempting, It's a bit more than I wanted to spend really. I'm not generally big on effects, but need some for this new band, I'll give it some thought, thanks.

Big Dave Swift is a top geezer, seen him play a couple of times, and yes he nails it every time. Mind you, even if he played a bum note, I doubt anyone would have the guts to tell him.

Well it all depends on the kind of stuff you play, and the kind of sound you want. All I can say is, the Squier is a great little bass, but so's the OLP, which as you say, has more strings to its bow, litterally.

No-one can decide but you, however, if you jump on the Squier VMJ, you won't be sorry, IMO.

Hmmm odb-3 eh? well there's certainly plenty of them on the bay, I'm not sure if that's because they're popular or because everyone's trying to get rid of theirs? It's certainly the logical choice as it seems to be a standard pedal board regular, I just wondered what else there was around.

The panic to get one is over, as I needed it for Wednesday, that won't happen now, so I've got more time to look around.

I'm after some quick advice, as I need to get the pedal asap.

I need an overdrive/distortion pedal, fairly cheap as I can't afford boutique stuff at the moment. It's for a couple of Muse covers and other bits and bobs in the set, so I need something with some real distortion not just nice overdrive.

Used or new, don't care, I just need it quick, but I don't want something totally crap, it needs to be a decent pedal. I've heard mixed reports on the OD-3, is the Ibanez PD-7 Phat head any good? Is the little Behringer BOD-1 any good?

Any recommendations?

Mine's a 2 EQ version of the one above. I use that and a jazz live, and at Saturdays gig, the ray sounded so awesome, the jazz didn't get a look in all night. Power, punch and clarity all rolled in to one sexy body................ and the bass is nice too.

I'd always wanted one, now I've got one, and it's my number one, I love it.

+1 on the Lakland JO, those Lindy Fralins on mine were stunning. Also Alun's quite right, for a couple of hundred quid, the Squier VMJ is simply outstanding. Don't let it's price tag put you off.

Just a straight switch change Mike, but I was told that the old switch appeared to be ok in the first place. One thing I have done is adjusted the length of the shaft of one of the plugs on my daisy chain. The power socket is quite deep on the Aphex, and some daisy chain plugs don't go far enough into the socket, thus the power was intermittent, possibly the reason for my problem in the first place, chances are the switch was fine. So I trimmed back a bit of the plastic on the daisy chain plug with a pair of pliers to make the metal shaft a bit longer, so now it fits all the way in (OOer) nice and snug, and no problems at all last night.

I used my repaired pedal last night at a gig, and boy have I missed it. One flick of a switch, and there was my big bottom for all see.............er..................hear.

I've sold a few I wish I hadn't, but I really was a pillock for selling my Marcus. I tried to buy it back, but quite rightly I was told "no chance" by it's new owner.

Tried a Geddy (unfortunately in Sound Control) and wasn't impressed, only because of the usual lousy SC setup, but it put me off, I'm positive that they're great basses though.

I've got a Highway One which is nice, but I'd [i]definately[/i] look at the MIJ made Jazzes with the US pickups on here:

Salford had a nice fella called "Pash", who was a decent bass player, friendly and happy for you to try anything you liked. I did always feel that the staff were only after a sale at almost any cost, and were breathing down your neck until you told them you "weren't buying anything today" then they'd leave you alone.

The gear selection used to be really good, a whole wall of many different makes of basses, but the last time I was in, a few months ago, the stock was confined to only one little corner, it was pathetic. Not only that, but some of the basses appeared covered in condensation, the tuners were actually [i]wet[/i]!!! That included most of the Jazzes, and Musicmans, and couple of high end Warwicks.

A mate of mine is a manager at a SC shop too, and has infromed me a few times that he can't wait to leave.

You'll love it. They're superb basses, and like Paul says, capable of almost any tone you need. I'd love one myself.

I forgot to say, on the down side, they have a tendancy to break their footswitches. Mine's no exception, and is currently awaiting a replacement. Once done, I believe they're fine from then on.

Superb little pedal.

Big bottom end boost, big clear, crisp highs, it makes an average rig sound fantastic, and makes a great rig sound massive.

It doesn't boost volume levels at all, it just widens the spectum of tones, more bottom, more top.

I reviewed mine on the old Bassworld site, and I likened it to this: Imagine your sound as an accordion half open, then you switch on the Aphex, and then imagine you stretch open the accordion as far as it'll go. That's what the pedal does to your sound.

I hope that makes sense.

As in other simillar threads, I'd say the same thing..........Squier Vintage Modified Jazz and Yamaha BB414, both great basses.

Don't let your stepdad decide for you though, go and try a few in the shops and decide for yourself, you'll know what you like the best only by listening to them with your own ears.

For what it's worth, if it was me, the Squier would be favourite.

I tried the DOD FX25 as you know Steve, I had yours, but I couldn't get on with it. I can't afford Boutique level stuff either, but I just need a giggable filter to use on a couple of songs, nothing fancy, but something with a nice useable [i]downward[/i] wah. Would the MXR do that do you reckon? Or maybe a Maxon AF9?

How does the MXR Auto Q measure up?
