1.
I'm trying to cope with a bereavement here so would rather not be involved in this right now but seeing as I won't get any sleep tonight....

We seem to have got off on the wrong foot here. Would you like to point out where I've tried to change anyone's opinion please? You have clearly misunderstood my intentions... which I suppose could account for your "bollox" to me comment.

My purpose for posting in the thread is merely to offer some balance to wary modders that may be passing through who could be mislead by opinion outweighing fact. I don't think I need the ethos of customising explained to me but thanks for your take on it. You say that the mod doesn't matter as long as the modder is happy. Ok but I personally believe that a mod has more merit if it actually changes something... and not in some placebo effect way.

A point I'd like to make is that the word "upgrade" was used when describing swapping out the loom. Upgrade implies improvement. Well if someone can hear the difference between one piece of wire or pot to another then I guess that it's an upgrade. Sadly I can't make such a claim as I only have human ears.
A loom swap may include a different value capacitor - changing this single component (which retails for a few pence and takes about 30 seconds to desolder the old one and put the new one in) will account for a slight change in tonal characteristics but it would be a mighty big step to suggest that the aural difference would be akin to changing the pickups (unless of course you were changing the pickups for pretty much identical ones..... or overstating a product on someone's behalf) and so would be pointless swapping out the whole loom for.

I am not going to comment on specific harness as they are not the subject of this thread. I do think that ready made looms are fantastic for saving 10 minutes (maybe 5 minutes in the case of a P bass :)) knocking up your own one when doing a project from scratch. But if modding is your thing then why not actually do it yourself... and the P circuit is probably the best place to start.

For my latest project I designed and built this passive circuit. Barring one very specialist component the entire loom cost maybe a tenner to put together using the very best (subjective point) components. Ok it took a while to do but it is a very complicated circuit. P circuits are (short of wiring a pup directly to the jack) the simplest circuit known to bass players and I'm fully on the side of encouraging modders to build their own. After all where's the satisfaction in bolting off the shelf gear into your bass and calling it your own mod?
Firstly sorry to hear of your loss, never easy, secondly the"bollox"certainly isnt aimed at you, maybe came across wrong but i meant in general,in any area of modding,as earlier examples ie pc,bike, car etc somethimes people havnt got the resources for one off parts etc and best they can do is get of the shelf items,in other area i do modding and this often has me using lathes, welder etc making my own stuff,as far as bass or any guitar based stuff is concerned i admit i dont know much, wiring i can do,painting i do as we have a high tech spray shop at work and have turned a couple of nice bass bodies out,i take my hat off to you with the circuitry as last total rewire i done was a schecter that the guts had been torn out and i had a box with 4 pots,1 switch and a hacked up s/dunc bit of circuit board, got pissed off trying and it ended up a 2 vol and 1 tone passive setup with the rest redundant....in saying that im tempted to have another shot at it cos i hate giving up...i think yer m8 here isnt so much taking the huff but more mucking around saying hes not gonna be wound up :)

  2. Ive got my pc running thru my rig,was listening to you play, son appears askin"was u playing along with that?"(had my bass plugged in)dont know why but "yea, getting better eh?"...."do it again then"he says,"no,feck off"....."knew it.you played longer than your usual 20 seconds".............anyway sound cool as f**k,id love to get to that standard :)

  3.
Would changing the ignition barrel on your bike be a life altering experience? Would it increase performance, save energy, look nicer or make your ride any better? In MY world it wouldn't.

That's not to say that someone who didn't fully understand the workings of an ignition barrel wouldn't feel a benefit from simply changing one, just because someone else told them that there would be a benefit.

In MY world replacing parts which already function and have no impact on performance, comfort or aesthetics with equally functional parts only more expensive is not an upgrade.

I'd rather save my dosh and put it toward remapping the ECU or something that actually mattered.
Good point,id agree that changing a barrel wouldnt be beneficial merely for the sake of it,but Hanson writes"I'm a total convert. After fitting one of KiOgon's harnesses in my Jim Deacon I think it's mod right up there with changing pickups. In fact I am thinking of going for a jazz style one for my Retrovibe. "......that tells me HE found it beneficial in which case i wouldnt try altering his opinion, plus the guys modding a £60 bass and since changing the cheap harness wouldnt cost much i probably would too whilst it was stripped to the guts, end of the day m8 as i said customising be it even from a headstock sticker to the full hardware change is individual......each to their own.

  4.
look forward to seeing how your getting on, I keep changing design track but as the pedal trains are so popular I thought the dimensions would give a good starting point for whatever design i end up making.

I am planning on chrome plating an aluminium construction, her is a place that does chrome plating aluminium I don't think it will add too much weight overall.
Interesting site m8,its only in recent yrs chroming(or n/plating)has progressed to a descent level and they look professional, hands up ive copied a design i seen on another forum but its mostly older pedals im using so left options for mounting etc,my pet hate in anything electric is cables everywhere so that area is spot on,way its looking i,ll have 3 connections...1 power and 1 in/out,all the lighting(and theres a fair bit)is hidden and just makes the board glow, end of the day its like any project,if it turns out good fair enough,if its sh*te.....well at least its my own sh*te and maybe the next will be better, yea get them pics to you later tonight

  5.
Hi to all,

I am designing a custom pedal board to be fabricated & then chrome plated but I wondered if a Pedaltrain owner could confirm the dimensions noted on the image below to help me develop my layout.

also, I would welcome any problems you guys have found using the various types of 'off the shelf' boards. My main reason for a custom design will be to provide increased space for power (including wall-wart supplies) and a flat base area at the side for a wah as I would prefer this to be at floor level.

thank you in advance for any comments you may have - they could make all the difference with my final unit.

Funnily enough im starting my pedal box this week(doing it at work on nightshift),ive changed my design 3 times since last Sunday but finally worked it out,im doing it in Aluminium with the Power mounted underneath and only the power inputs and connecting jacks are seen, its got more truck bits on it than purchased,ie-led bars and neon strips more recognisable on our fleet of Hinos and Volvos :) .....but the actual frame has turned out amazing.......using metal and esp chrome plating is gonna be heavy,i,ll pm u some pics from work tonight maybe give you some ideas or piss yourself laughing.

  6.
I'm a total convert. After fitting one of KiOgon's harnesses in my Jim Deacon I think it's mod right up there with changing pickups. In fact I am thinking of going for a jazz style one for my Retrovibe.
If your chuffed with it m8 it is"the real world",thats what any customising,in any area, bike, car, guitar etc is about....creating something YOU want/like....In an ideal world we would all own all the top gear that cost a bomb, except im Scottish,a race by nature thats tighter than a ducks arse and despite bass being one of my loves, the only way i would spend 2 grand plus on any guitar is if it was special.....special as in does 185mph like my bike, gave mind blowing oral and took me to the pub etc......way off topic but basically saying others might think your/mine/his ideas are a bit "unreal",but as long as yer happy bollox to anyone else :) ,let them live in THEIR real world.end of sermon...

  7.
Just fancy upgrading the electronics before i try and stick on a Mighty Mite neck seeing as thats all i can afford atm. I bought the Ryder to Mod and its exactly what al be doing, to be honest, if it never came in sonic blue i wouldnt have bought one. (silly, i know)

I plan on somehow getting another and putting in two jazz pups and having a set of stacked knobs again with a Mighty Mite neck.

I think i'm modding just for the sake of it...
Seems a good bass to mod with, new, cheap and wirings a breeze,im doing my cheapo Marlin P bass that the wife erm"surprised" me with at xmas,i had a set Duncan Designed pups lying around,2 months later it now looks like a tarts handbag with gold hardware everywhere and a fetching set of DR luminous green strings and new headstock logo reading"Fecker jizz bass",,ironically all this has made it less embarrassing to play :)

  8.
Ah.
I've not tried getting carpet off but I can imagine it being a real pain in the ar*e... :)
I had a quick Google but the only UK place I could find are looking at £100 in materials and £140 in labour per cab.
If your like me and dont care about keeping cabs original you could visit your local carpet store and buy the cheapest cord carpet they sell,i covered an old Peavey 1820 with it in a fetching charcoal colour, put new corner bits from Maplin on and it looked the dogs danglies :)
i used evo stick aquired from work but in the past used spray adhesive...isnt hard
carpet came in 3.3 mtr length and i bought a metre wide strip, cost about 12 quid, corners were about 4 quid for heavy plastic ones.

  9.
Hi all.

Just fitting some EMG Selects onto a rebuild project I've got going on.

A little confused about the wires coming out of the p-ups...

The EMG instructions refer to a white wire and an unspecified (but coloured black in the diagram) ground wire.

My wires are white and a bare wire with an orangey sheath. (Pics below).

Should I assume that my white is the white refered to in the diagram and that the bare wire is the ground?

    Cheers!
The bare is defo to ground.

  10. Most the stuff ive learned has been from Scotts site, intending starting his video tutoring soon as due to my work schedule i cant pre book lessons with anyone locally, his stuff i found on Youtube from day 1 has kept me interested in bass and by far the best ive seen online, others i tried albeit excellent players seem to forget picking up an instrument from scratch is challenging and what they find really basic and easy is total alien to the likes of me.....good to see these guys though that love what they do so much they take time out to share it with us.

  11.
The rear section of a loudspeaker has a tube shaped former with a precision wound coil around it.
The coil is dunked in a laquer to prevent the windings from slipping as the speaker moves in and out.

If the speaker has a 'seized coil' then it has generally been overpowered at some point in its life and the laquer has melted and sometimes some of the windings will slip down the former.

This stops the speaker from moving in and out smoothly and poor performance and sound quality will be heard.

In anticipation of the obvious question, no you can't - it'll need a recone :)
Cheers guys that clears that up,its part of a rake of gear im getting off a dude emigrating to Australia so doesnt have a bearing on the price etc, wont be going down the recone road again, done it with an 18" black widow out of an old Peavey 1810 cab and it cost more than i paid for the peavey mk111 head AND the cab,if they had been fixable i had this stupid notion of building a cab using the 3 x18" and 4x10" Scorpions i have spare....would have led to grief from the wife n kids and probably an ASBO too...thanks again :)

  12. Any finishing work is f***ing extortionate,i paint anything from cars to bikes and the last few months have done old(worthless too)strat copies, without blowing my own horn they turned out immaculate, you make the best of what enviorment you have, even a cupboard does, just make sure its dust free and at a decent temprature,if your using a new blank give it a go m8 you will be surprised with the results, for starts you dont have much sanding taking old paint laquer of,get it smooth as you can, feel it as well as scrutenizing it before painting,in any refinishing work the saying"if a blind man can feel it,a blind man can see it"applies,i dont even sand between coats,i build the colour up then wet sand using 1200 grade wet n dry,the laquer gives the paint depth so apply it in thin coats til you get bored........plenty of them, then i use 1500 grit wet n dry(again wet)when FULLY dry, then automative cutting compound(forget T Cut its useless imo)if you spend the time on it you will get a finish better than many stock finished guitars ive seen, save a fortune plus yel be chuffed knowing you done it........sorry to rattle on about it lol but its somehing ive really got into recently,if you decide to go for it PM me and ill send you a couple of good e-books on axe painting :)

  13.
I was listening to some old tracks I recorded, and thought this might be useful as I had a bass free version.

Wrote this something like 6 years ago, me on guitar with some drum loops.

Hope someone finds it useful to jam along with. :)

cheers, ive been playing around with it,good fun :)

Well what were you expecting - a small furry animal with a penchant for tool making? :)
[/quotThat explains why my Toolbox Zoo project flopped...really thought people would flock to see my Monkey wrench and Crocodile clips...

  16. were talkin about a 6mm approx screw stuck in a lump of wood here lol, hack the button off, grab the remaining shank with a pair of pliers and gently wiggle it....bet u can withdraw it easy with moleys/pliers...had a 18mm threaded bolt shear in a truck chassis at work, now that was a f****r

  17. ive 3 old cabs,Hartke vx210,Peavey 1820,and a obselete 1x15 made by"KMD"(dont ask)...experimented using my Peavey mk111 bass head(now f****d) and the matching KMD GS130sb head, all individually sound fine, all 8ohm....together sound total sh*te,im no expert by any means but my next prorer rig is gonna be as matched as i can afford m8.

  18.
As per title.

Wiring P bass pickups straight to the jack, so where do I attach the earth wire from the bridge?

    Thanks.
I wired a Schecter straight to jack(via 2 pots, just wired it to earth on jack socket, maybe luck but no buzzing and havnt fried myself yet.

  19.
Any ddr2 memory and 775 cpu left?
