Shops do what they do and stock what they stock because it's financially viable. Judging by the (display) stock levels in the two guitary music shops here where electric guitars outnumber electric basses by anything between 8 and 10 to 1 I'd say that the bass coolness factor just isn't there yet in Aberdeen. It does put me on a bit of a downer to be honest, but at least it stops me just walking in and buying stuff.

FWIW bass has always been cool as far as I'm concerned. The only instruments I have spent any time gaining some level of competence with are the recorder (at primary school) and the bass.
my confidence was knocked out of me when younger, was in the BB and took up the bugle, the old man only let me practice in the shed at the bottom of the garden, even then had to stuff a sock in the end of it....old bastard. :)

  2.
In all fairness Dougie, your T was in a bit of a state when we did the deal for the Ibanez SR800. Selector switch was snapped off, the bridge pickup wasn't working, tuners were bent, it needed fret-dressing & a setup - as well as a bloody good clean! If you paid a tech to do the work you wouldn't get change out of £100. Worth mentioning that I sold my other SR800 (fretless) here a few years ago for £250 - so I felt the deal we did was more than reasonable. Really hope you don't feel ripped-off, mate. :)

If I moved my T-40 on (which I'm considering, because it's spine-crushingly heavy & I can't gig it) the price would be around £280 - which definitely makes this much more unusual example a bargain in my view - if I hadn't got Dougie's old one I'd be very interested.

    Jon.
You misunderstood Jon,im saying exactly that....i got what i consider more than £280 and his looks a better example AND its cased.....trust me i couldnt have been happier with the deal and as ive said a few times here your 100% and would deal with you anytime

  3.
It is worth noting that people aren't great sellers by default just because they sell on here. I've had a hell of a time with one particular member, the moderators have done all they can but there's only so much they can do when they have no legal power over members. It's still not been resolved and I don't expect it to be, so people do have bad trades on here.

But I've had many good ones, I'd rather trade through here than ebay or other sites. It is (and will always be) a case of buyer beware.
ive sold to 2 buyers here, bought from 3.all in all id trust this place as oppossed to the bay etc...

  4.
My original bass started life as a Japanese Ibanez, and had adjustable pole piece P-J pickups; I was told by a few folks over the years that they were most likely to be DiMarzio. No identifying marks at all IIRC.
Bassassin seems to be a fount of knowledge on Jap stuff.
he is indeed, ive been in his basement studio, its like being in a sweetshop aged 8......Jon knows his stuff.

  5.
Me Little Bastard Mini Rig, it may be small but FCUK it sounds good :)
Im banned from 16 music shops for rubbing myself up and down gear such as this,.....

  6.
tbh, I'm not entirely convinced by Fender Original pickups. Admittedly I've only used USA electric guitar ones, but they were, well, OK. We have some Japanese ones in the shop which IMHO are way broader and richer of tone! Then you get onto Seymours, etc...
thats the thing, ive now a few sets, also got a pair of pups off ebay for a Ibby j series copy, they look old, adjustable poles etc and sound good but it would be nice knowing exactly what im paying for due to no markings etc.

As essential, I have to add my Pandora - I couldn't live without it and it's so much better than any other similar product out there.

Auralex Gramma Pad - lives in the car

A folding sack-truck or trolley - I got one of these, exactly the same from Aldi a few years ago for £14, in fact three of us in the band got one each. They are great, I saw them in Focus DIY last year for £30 and thought they were steep for that price. If you do get one I would recommend dismantling it and lock-tite all the nuts and bolts, I actually replaced all the ones on mine with those self-locking nuts.
This isnt your gig bag admit it........the missus lobbed you out??

  8.
Well, being at the tender age of 17, nothing that major has happened to me, but I have been playing bass for 3 years if that counts for anything, long may it last too!
advice from a 46 yr old whos been married 20yrs with 6 kids, albeit have one or two toys to keep sane.....
stick with the bass, advantages are aplenty....
your bass will never complain if you fondle another bass
    your bass will age better
your bass will never refuse to please you because you didnt paint the ceiling
your bass will never tell your best m8 hes an alcoholic waste of sperm(hmmmm)
you can own lots of basses, none of them will complain
    the list is endless..........

  9.
When i hit 40, i still had very long hair no grey and no bass man gut! It's unfair now that im 49,32 yr old wife,3 kids under12 and a Harley, still no bassman gut, cant now afford all the toys i had when i was 40,or anything really! Im off the radar kids came along and still love playing "Free" songs .And im going grey/bald.And im joining a band of much less tallented numpties soon.

I think i might have f****d up,but i give less of a toss about it now than i did then. :) :)
Your life actually sounds quite balanced apart from owning a Harley.

  10.
And don’t always believe the feedback.

A few years ago I was watching a WAL bass auction. It was sold and then the seller backed out of the deal. He duly got bad feed back, and then I noticed that his feedback was getting better. He was selling silly things, like a hair for 1p, probably to another Id he owned and was giving himself good feedback!
i remember him,i bought his entire stock

  11.
Nearly spilled the coffee there, best chortle of the morning!

I'd go for decent quality ones like Seymour Duncan, EMG etc if you're going to the hassle of changing pickups at all. As mentioned above most of these have some identification, which a decent ebayer will make obvious. Buying on here you have a better ratio of decent types, I'd say!
Totally m8,3 deals done here and all 3 helped beyond the call of duty.

  12.
It can be very tough. Sometimes you just have to go on trust. It's nice if you can get it's resistance reading on a multimeter that you can cross reference. Some pups have identifiable serials or instantly recognisable colour combinations of wiring. Often (with Fender for example) you just have no way of fully knowing just by looking.
Some manufacturers like SD place part numbers on the backs of theirs. I think Wizard put a name sticker on theirs. I have a set of Bill Lawrence pups which are distinguished from fakes or the lesser quality "factory" BLs because he was kind enough to actually hand sign them in biro.
All you can do is look out for the physical signs, resin sealed, wax dipped, cloth tape/sleeving, raised poles, do they look too new for vintage etc. and compare them to pics or descriptions from the net.
cheers m8,few pointers to go on there, ideally id do all dealing here its the usual night shift boredom,no one on here to have rational freindly debates about football etc so end up roaming thru ebay........

  13.
How do you know they were off a Squier? I don't know how you tell , sorry. I have the same dilemma. I suggest buying off here because no-one wants their reputation sullied by mis-selling.
by luck as it happens, the guy listed them as"vintage 60s Fender P Bass original pickups",i won them and asked him if he had any of the other parts, thats when he told me it was a Squier he had yrs ago,i asked him why the listing said original Fender p bass,it got a little bitchy when he asked me"why whats so different between a fender and a squier by fender"and i told him not much apart from about £700 quid,we agreed that perhaps he should retain them, either back in his loft,or up his arse.so im trying to find ways of getting what is advertised as there must be hundreds of items like this, every pup i look at that fits p basses look the same to me

  14.
Very good chance they are, with all the 'mark ...' heads they were basically the same parts from the mark iii on. If you have 4 pots I can get that would be amazing mate, thanks.
Of course you can....pm yer addy....looks easier sending the front board complete, avoid damage unsoldering

  15.
Got an old mark vi head today, works lovely but a couple of the pots are snapped off, can still turn with pliers but not overly convenient.Anyone reccomend somebody to replace them Bridgend/Cardiff area?
if by chance the pots are the same as the MK111 ive so many im giving them away.......and knobs
    and eq sliders
everything that isnt an output to be precise

  16.
And NO batteries needed!
certainly versatile,"Due to its simplicity, it is also a perfect toy and first string instrument for kids or beginners. "
That conjurs quite a sketch in my house....."erm thanks dad..how did you guess id asked santa for a concrete bucket, sturdy stick and roll of string?"............"mummmmmmmmmm,dads took them drugs again that you left him for in the nineties!!!!"

  17.
Seriously paypal can take money directly from your bank account in the event someone wants a refund? I use a bank account that only has around 100 pound in at any one time, unless I'm buying something specific, and I don't have an agreed overdrat. So if they took a refund of say 1500 pound for a bass, when the money was not in the account I'd have to pay huge bank charges aswell I imagine.

It's lucky I don't sell anything on ebay but I'm still shocked...
relax m8,it needs to be verified for them to take dosh out,and its usually only their listing fees,if iits not verified or contain sufficient funds they cant do jack sh*t.i get a weekly message asking me to verify, being a new seller with 300 quid getting held til the f***erS i was good enough to pay immediatley or courier on a next day tracked decide to award my feedback....they can verify my fat sweaty arse til the cows come home but the piggy banks staying tighter than a nuns flaps in a sandstorm.
