    Latest e-mail from Sire:

    Hello William.

This is Mariano from Sire customer service.

    Sorry for the late reply.

This is the information received from the factory technician.

In the case of the Z series, the 4-string is 19mm and the 5-string is 17.5mm.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you for choosing SIRE!

That is a little bit disappointing, I was hoping for similar string spacing to their P5R models🙁

    Thank you!

    17.5 mm, as on a Stingray 5! 🙈

Now I've got to check them out! :)

18mm works for me.  16-16.5mm doesn't.  My only fiver has a 18.25mm spacing at the bridge and I'm hoping for something close, so that swapping basses is straightforward.  The Z7s look like a great option, if they aren't too heavy and the string spacing is at least 18mm.  Fingers crossed.

I am the same, that's why I'd like to know. At least 17mm, ideally 17.5 (Stingray, for example) to 18mm. I would even prefer 19mm to 16mm.

  3. I have a little bag where I carry backups: some tools, strings, a strap, cables, batteries, adaptors, a little BAM200 amplifier... a wide range of stuff.

I've just replaced it with a slightly larger one.

Last night at soundcheck I realise I don't have my usual strap in the case. I had removed it to clean the bass a bit, and forgot to put it back. No biggie, I have a backup! Don't I feel smug?

No strap. I didn't put a backup one in the new bag...

Guy from the venue finds one. It's flimsy and has seen better days but I'm not complaining.

20 seconds into the first song of our 1st set... strap breaks. Managed to catch the bass, but I had to do the gig sitting down.

You know what? It was a little weird but so comfy! :) I may forget my strap more often ;)

    Sire's response, copied and pasted:

    Hello Bill.

Thank you for contacting Sireguitars and for your inquiry.

    Sorry for the late response.

Below is nut width and string spacing information.

    4 String nut width: 38mm
    5 String nut width: 46mm

    4 String spacing: 20mm
    5 String spacing: 18mm

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you for choosing SIRE!

18mm on the 5-string sounds great, but the pictures I've seen looks like the polepieces are spaced as on 16-16.5mm Stingrayesque basses, which are quite common...

I would love to know for sure.

Just wondering what the reaction from punters might have been if you played anything by Alice in Chains, Cure etc. Or do landlords rule out anything like that from the off?

Sometimes it can be good, but I wouldn't make a habit of playing depressing songs in a pub, as people generally go there to have a nice time.

Whenever I see a "singer songwriter" type with their acoustic guitar my spidey sense tingles, because far too many just spew "deep" dirge song after song and it would definitely make me want to relocate to happier venue for my libations.

I see "both sides" having some merit in their views. On this occasion I do not agree with enforcing the rules.

I may be a bit of a dreamer, but I detest following rules just because they're written and at the same time ignoring the "spirit of the rule", or what is it that the rule is attempting to achieve. Rules are suppose to help, not being a substitute for thinking, in my opinion of course.

There is a difference between asking how much something is with an intention to elicit interest and a sale, and someone asking the more general question I am seeing here, in our 'bass community'. It's not a bed of roses to moderate a forum, and I'm grateful for the mods here, this is by far the most reasonable forum I frequent in that respect. I understand that sometimes blanket rules have to be made because there's no reasonable way to deal with every little thing on a case by case basis, it would be unmanageable. However, when a situation that's worthy of a 'wave pass' arises and it's noticed... why not let it be?

If this can be sorted simply by having a supporting membership, let me pay for it @ped

I am pretty sure that @Cygnus x-1 could afford it, that's not the issue. I just see someone in a place I hang out often having been caught in an unpleasant situation and I'd like to do something nice, that's all, just like I've benefited from the kindless random strangers in the past too, more than a few times.

  7. I recently bought Chris' Zoom B3 FX unit.

I couldn't hope for a better experience. Great communications and really fast delivery. He noticed something was not quite right and he informed me at once. The issue was very minor, and I'm happy with the B3 as it is. He even offered me a generous partial refund (his own initiative), but I didn't take it as it really is a minor issue, and it shows me how honest Chris is, and a real gent.

    Thank you, Chris! :)

This was the song I'd previously heard her on. Just disgraceful. Like they tried to create the most stereotypical pop punk song with the worst lyrics. I've no idea why Travis Barker agreed to play on it.

This was already dated when Blink 182 and Avril Lavigne were doing the same exact song 20 years ago...

why wouldn't you compress after filter? Filter reacts to the input as normal, the signal kept under control a bit by the compressor?

That's what i used to do with a FX25. Those filters have wild swings, they're very responsive when you set the sensitivity control just right. The compressor afterwards made the whole thing a little less... wild, in a good way.

When my talent level demands it, I’ll shift to a five. Luckily I think I’m safe until 2351.

I actually find it easier to play a 5-string now. All the notes are right there, 2 octaves within 5 frets, going back to 4 feels a bit like when my dad removed the stabilisers from mi bicycle.

I know you won't believe me, just like I would not have believed it myself not that long ago. :D

(Edited as I've just seen what this thread is actually about!)

I have three (active versions!) One was converted to fretless (Rotosound Swing Bass), one had the neck stripped, slimmed and oiled (GHS Brite Flats)and the third is all original (Ernie Ball Slinky).  All purchased in 2023 (£350, £380 and £400).  I really love these basses - more than my EBMM 3-band, Ric 4001, USA Fender P and various 'lesser' basses.  The only other bass that gets a look in is my Hofner Club.

I'm thinking of adding an active/passive switch to no.3.

If you can pick one up at a good price, don't hesitate.  Ignore the funky finish (which I like), and don't sweat about stripping the neck if you don't like the sprayed finish.  For the price of a budget bass you'll have one of the best basses around (and you won't have to worry about dinging it!

When our civilisation falls and it all becomes Mad Max-esque... My bass would be an EBMM SUB. It can be used as a weapon, and it will sound great ;)

I had an early SUB5 that I regret so much selling... The neck was amazing. But idiot me was not into 5 strings yet 🙄😄

The line 6 systems seem good for the price but Iv been told to steer clear of them if you have an active bass.

Anybody can say whatever they want, and a lot of people talk out of their rear ends.

Been using Line6 wireless since 2009 with mostly active basses. I see them in use by a wide range of people playing a wide range of instruments. You'll be fine.

Are you being serious?  It was clearly a parody of the very rude user from earlier today telling me to wind my neck in.  I took zero offence to it.

That's how I read it too, that @Supernaut was bringing some lighter atmosphere by mocking the aforementioned rude user. :)

That what i meant...they could easily been made in Estonia.

The link I posted earlier suggests the company is from Slovenia, where maybe or maybe not they assemble the instruments, which come from Asia.

Who wants a 42mm nut? Seriously.

Apart from that and the after thought headstock, I kinda like the white.

Me, for example, I don't want anything narrower than that!

When I ordered my first Maruszczyk I had to insist on 43mm, despite the insistence by them that 40-41mm is plenty. :D My Precision at the time was 45mm!

New Bass Day yesterday, a Harley Benton JP-45OP 4 string bass in a Natural finish, bought from Paul @Shepster8316 on Basschat. Fantastic bass that looks and sounds incredible and plays beauifully, the neck is a dream to play. Paul had set up the bass perfect with a low action, don't know how HB could produce such a killer bass for so little money !!, the roasted maple neck and fret board is stunning 😍. See pics below 🎸👍😃

That line of basses are HB's secret weapon in my opinion. I've got both the JJ and the JP in 5-string and I would expect them to cost 3x as much, easily.
