1.
Where do you find these venue staff who can tell/give a crap about basses? I could turn up with a 9-string solid gold Alembic with 27 LEDs and all I'd get would be "The bass is a bit shiny, mate..."
We were playing in Witchwood Ashton. It was only one staff that came up to me and ask about the Bass. He probably a bass player himself or a DT fan since he know about John Myung lol.
2.
They are fantastic basses. I usually have the pickup blend on my HS biased about 60/40 to the bridge, bass slightly cut, slight mid boost, amp flat and bang, tonal heaven.
This is exactly I do on my HS Bongo setting lol. This settings works great 99% of the time. It cuts and blend in nicely in the mix. The only time when I blend 60/40 to the neck pickup is when I need the deep low backing the piano/key when guitar and drum does not play on that song. Otherwise 60/40 on the bridge pickup.
3. I always find it Trace amp sounds best with Trace cab. I started off with a GP11 then end up selling my TC cab and gone back to a Trace 15" cab lol.
4. Thanks guys, I think part of my problem is to do with the heavy right hand technique because I'm mainly a finger style player, so when it comes to slap and pop my right hand strike and pop heavily. Watching too much Flea I guess lol.
5. I have a Boss Compressor Sustainer which have been modded to sound and suit better on bass. It does act abit like a limiter when i turn the "sustain" knob anti clockwise and more sustain note if I turn it clockwise. It work great for my finger style playing. I think I need to mess around with my current pedal first to see what I need. Funny enough I use to own a Boss LMB3 but never got on with it and end up selling it. Maybe a volume pedal will do the trick.
6. I'm a finger style player and like mid on my tone when I play live/band rehearsal etc. I use compressor to tighten/round things up on my tone. Here's the problem, on one of the song we trying to play the bass line is pretty funky but play with finger style but one some part of the riff it changes to a few slap and pop thing. The problem I'm getting is the volume on the slap/pop thing is loud because of my tone setting. I just want a even volume when doing things like that, will a compressor do the job?
7. I like pbass going into a good 15" but thats just me.
8. They are good heads. I won't doubt their reliability, my Trace GP11 is even older then that (20+ years) and it still works fine. Also don't get put off by the power rating because Trace Elliot stuff is under rated in my opinion. They are very loud.
9. The Trace 1153 cab I got is pretty light for a trace. I can easily manage to lift but the 4x10 Trace is impossible for me to lift .....
10. We give that a try next time, hopefully things will go better.
11. Actually we do have a monitor each, as usual the headline band have all the time in the world to sound check and because we are the first one to go on, we only get like 5min sound check ....... We kinda got use to it already and get the job done even tho the stage sound is bad.
12. During the sound check I did realise the problem and ask the SE to put some bass via my monitor to reinforce the stage sound abit which actually help and everyone can hear the bass. I personally think the stage volume is way too loud anyway because the vocal can't hear herself probably and do we. We been told not to touch any settings on the stage rig so we have no choice but to plug away. We have mess up abit on 2 of our songs becuase of that.
13. I'm interest on the fretless one which I think I will buy one because it sounded pretty decent but I'm fancy changing the neck to a unline jazz neck.
14. I have seen it as well. Interesting build.
15. I use to have a stingray and certainly it sounded different and feels different. Is a superb bass but not really my thing but the bongo does tick every boxes on my list. It may look ugly to some people but it looks cool to me. You are damn right about the pre and the pickup, it is superb.
16.
I get this too. I wonder how the amps survive some of the settings I've found them with... Its usually bass on 10, treble and mids on -10, volume and gain on 10... Must be utterly inaudible.
It was like that on saturday when I was using a spomebody else amp on stage and everything was crank to full (SS amp) and already produce distortion sound. When I plug in my bass the sound is bad and the worse thing is it doesn't cut in on stage in terms of sound and lack of volume as well. My bongo bass was max out and I fear the amp will die soon because my bongo is a very hot bass.
17. I actually have the MM Bongo just over a year and I haven't gig with the bass before because I'm so lazy and just use a P/J or J to gig. Done a gig last Saturday with PA support and I decided to take my Bongo out to gig. First thing I get from some staff in the venue was, Staff: "Is that a Musicman Bongo?" Me: "Yeah is the 4 string HS model" Staff: "Cool man, John Myung plays the same bass" Me: "Yeah he does but he plays the 6 string model with a 5 string neck etc" Thats pretty positive but the best part was how the bass sound and on that night. The sound tech really love the tone of this bass and said the bass sounded really good in the mix. The bass certainly feels good to gig with, lighter then my P and J bass which is good and the tone of this thing is insane. With the S pickup on the neck position and the MM pickup on the bridge position, I can dial in almost any tone at all, from deep bass to growly mids. Strangely I find the bongo pump out too much bass when everything is flat and use both pickup. I tend to blend towards the MM pickup, add mid and cut little bit on bass. Overall very good experience gigging with the bass. Certainly will use it again from the future.
18. I tend to leave my EQ flat and most of the time I don't need to boost any low or treble. I only mess around with mids to suit my taste. If sound tech is mixing my sound via DI, then I can just dial in tons of mid so I can hear myself onstage.
19. I think in todays world, if you don't have alot of money to spend on a rig and want reliable and loud rig, I would suggest second hand TE stuff. They still gets the job done if you don't mind the weight.
20. I think the older TE stuff is fantastic and sound good as well. I use TE GP11 and 1153 cab for my gigs these days.
21. Is not my amp and I don't care too much, I have no choice because we are the first band to play and to help the sound tech guy I decided to play via that amp instead. Still I want to give credit to Orange because the amp does sound very loud for the size and power it got. Just happen to be play in the wrong type of gig lol.
22. You can't use the head only on that amp. Is not my amp and the amp is just a 50watt practice combo.
23. Seriously the amp is really struggling ..... I did not stay to listen to the head line band so can't tell whether the 50watt is enough or not. It was certainly not enough for me. At one point on some louder stuff we play i can't even hear myself. Don't think i made any mistakes because i know the song well but still frustrates me tho.
24. I have no idea how I just done a gig with a 50watt amp on stage lol.
25. Did a gig tonight and as usual, we not headlining so we just need to turn up with our equipment and play. For myself I don't need to bring anything apart from my bass and guitar stand etc. The bass is DI in the venue and the sound system is pretty good but the bass amp that I have to play is a Orange Crush 50 watt 12" combo. The on stage sound is terrible for this little combo but the DI sound was awesome. I think I have kill the amp a little bit because in order for me to get the same stage volume and hear myself, (not extremely loud) I have to crack the volume on this combo to max, gain to around 3-4 o'clock position and crack my bass volume full on (Musicman Bongo) in order to hear myself. I also have to ask the sound tech to dial in some bass on my monitor to support my onstage sound a little bit. The tone I was getting on stage is distortion/driven tone which is pretty terrible because is not a valve tone distortion/driven ...... Some other band came and compliment my bass tone and my bass playing so it was pretty good ...... My Ashdown LB30 is way much louder then this orange combo ........
