1. Totally agree with the comments about technique, damage etc. Be warned!! Coming from bass guitar if you go for your finger ends you can expect them to quickly blister and the ends to drop off. You need to get some meat behind those strings!
For me the upright is just a completely different instrument. If feels different, responds differently and makes you think about what to play in completely different ways to bass guitar.
Gear is a real red herring, the sound is ultimately in your hands far more so that bass guitar and it can be really difficult working out how to get a good stage sound. DB seems to be more vunerable to poor rooms, positioning etc so it's aways worth keeping that in mind.
Slam dunk it's great to try before you commit but in my experience you will need to invest a fair bit of yourself in DB before you can really work out if it's for you. It's also worth considering that it's a difficult bugger to play at first, not helped by the fact that a cheap starter instrument will demand far more from you to make it work. The physical relationship between you and the bass is massive in comparison to DB. A better quality bass will sing better and do more for you however this could run you some serious folding by which time you've probably worked a lot of this out for yourself....
Bottom line whatever your motivation it's well worth a look. DB opens up loads of musical opportunities for you and it's a massively fulfilling instrument once you've aligned yourself with it.
Best of luck

2. Thanks chaps, yes it's a 6 (or it might be a 6.5 - I think that's what they use on them now). My mistake.
Could I just point out that I'm not the kind of guys that makes a habit of exagerating the size of things by 4 inches.
It's a pretty effective set up, especially with the controls on the side. Good stand alone cab.

3. Just collected a very nice Epifani s2 UL310 from Jamie. Badge to follow however the cab itself is tip top and makes great bass noises when connected to other bass things.
Good guy to deal with and I very much needed and enjoyed the wee I had in his loo. It's a long way to Canterbury.

4. Bought a Cort Elrick from Mick a month or so ago. Nice bass but arrived damaged. Mick was very good at staying in touch intially and pledged to cover a reasonable amount of the repair cost. Unfortunately after an albiet slightly lengthy period to get the bass fixed he has gone dark.

Seems to be a stand up guy from the rest of the BC feedback and from our initial dealings - I don't know what has happened to him so can't comment. Just wanted to leave something reasonable.

Bass was great!

5. Following a trip to Dood's house last night I'm down one cab and a bass but up one Spector LX. Dood, you are a very bad man but thank you for the bass!

This leaves the Skjold FS only but the good news is I can take a little haircut on the price thanks to Dood's generosity - now £1,200.

Bought from Claude through BC a while back, I've put it back to standard tuning (it was at E-F) plus replaced the pickup selector switch with a standard pan. East pre, BEM top and headstock facing, black hardware. Bolt-on. What else can I tell you?
I think that in the future I'll regret letting this go but the reality is I'm just more at home on a 5 and this does not get the air-time it deserves with me.

Comes with a soft hardcase.

Of course any questions on any of this please get in touch. I'm in Norwich and you are very welcome to try before you buy etc.

Thanks,

Andy

6. Bought a G&L Tribute from Tom a short while ago - taken me a few weeks to get around to feedback - excellent deal throughout, good communication, prompt and safe shipping and a tip top bass. A reliable and honest guy to deal with. Thanks Tom.

7. Anyone interested in this beast? I'm having a clear out and whilst it's an excellent cab I just prefer my Ampeg 6x10 classic and this just doesn't get used.

Cab is pretty much mint, I would say it's done no more than a dozen gigs. Kickplate is a bit scratched but other than that mintier that a pack of tic tacs sprinkled on top of some minty ice cream and washed down with an Aquafresh frappe chaser. I've also replaced the original wheels with some heavy duty ones, this helps with the transport. These are also minty.

The spec is 800W at 4 ohms. Not sure if they make these anymore or not.... Hartke XL, nice.

To sell I'd like £325 ovno, trades wise I'm really looking for a MM Jazz 4 or very similar model - appreciate this would involve a bit of wedge as well.

I'm in Norfolk and I don't think this will fit in the standard Royal Mail packet. You would need to collect or I could have my arm twisted to travel a bit at your cost.

Any questions, let me know. Thanks folks.

8. One J-retro onboard preamp. Drops straight into the regular JB control cavity, including battery.
Check out the details at: http://www.east-uk.com/
Pre is used but in excellent condition, you simply need to connect Pups and battery clip and away you go.
Any questions let me know.
£195 new, £75 for this including UK shipping.

9.
Welcome aboard. Curious about going back to an AH400 for larger work - do you not think the F1 more than a match in volume/punch?
Well you kinda right, it's more about the tone. I do quite a lot of smaller gigs and to be honest it's just not worth it, sometimes not even viable, to have a larger head to truck around. If the AH400 were as small and portable as the F1 I'd use it all the time.
The F1 is great and completely neutral, this works just fine (especially on double bass) but I kind of prefer something with a little colour for electric bass. I used to use an Ampeg SVT5 prior to the Trace, this was also great but the Trace has a little more warmth, a bit more burp (which I like) and really great compression facilities. Being completely honest I do also like the blue light.
Taking a step back I think there are loads of great sounding amps out there, nothing is out and out better than the others which is probably why I end up changing my gear every so now and again. The great and distinctive thing about the F1 for me is it's size - using it with an Epifanin UL110 is a great combination for small work.
Anyhow thanks for the welcome, I'll switch off my blah for now!
Regs,
Andy

10. Hi there basschat community,

I've been registered to BC for a couple of months now but have only just got around to introducing myself.

Been playing c20 years, now doing all different kinds of stuff. Jazz work on double bass, function and corporate plus modern jazz on electric with a trio project.

Gear wise I'm reliant mainly on either my Fender JB or another of the various items in the stable. Fless 5s and 4s, home grown 5 E-C or fretted 6 (currently a Warwick $$ that I'm looking to trade). The double bass is a Kremona Rubner model that I bought a few years ago from Steve Laws of Sandarac music - very good instrument and well underrated.

Ampwise I use the F1 for small stuff and have recently gone back to green for larger work on Trace AH400. I've just rackmounted this with my midiverb and it is killer with my 8x10 Hartke XL. Various cabs graze on my cab farm getting a run out depending on the gig - Harkte 4x10 XL, Epifani UL110 and a Dr Bass 1260 to name a few.

I'm not quite sure how much time I'll have to browse the site but I'm planning to try and make some space to get around the various forums. I'm kind of falling into the trap of not making enought time for new things and I've got to kill that off.

For now I guess I'd love to hear from you, especially if you have any views on the 6 string world. With my modern jazz hat on I'm heavily influenced by Patitucci, Matt Garrison and Tony Greys sounds and I'm currently looking for a 6 to do what the Warwick doesn't. I did have an Alembic MK-5 balanceK body but sold that on last year, it was great but just not quite right and here I am a year later..... you all know how it goes.

Anyways, take it easy.

Andy

11.
Hi,

Moving myself definitly (for now :) ) to 6 strings.

MTD535-24:
Absolutely mint condition (you can't find the smallest ding)
35' scale
24 frets
AAAAA Spalted Maple top
Black Limba body
Wenge/Wenge neck and fingerboard
Matching headstock veneer
Case

Looking for 2600£ or a 6 strings fretted or fretless of the same quality level

The bass is located in Portugal

I'll answer to all serious propositions

More photos available for the interested

Thanks
I drift between 5 and 6 all the time (especially with a detuner on the 5). This is an awesome bass, have you thought about tuning up for the C/other.....

I'm looking to trade a nice 6 at the moment but you're punching above my weight...

Best of luck

Andy

12. Morning all,

I have a Warwick Corvette $$ 6 string, natural matt finish, gold hardward approx 1 year old (2009 model). Great bass in lots of different ways but bottom line is that after much reflection I'm not sure I'm really a Warwick guy.

In more favourable times I'd probably keep it however this is not an option and I need a working 6 that I'm comfortable with.

Spec wise I believe it's a standard $$ config and electronics. Twin MEC HB with 3-way coiltap on each (single, double, parrallel), volume, pan, bass, treble. Volume doubles as active/passive switch via a push-pull. The only thing it really has missing IMO is a passive tone control.

If there's anything else I can tell you just shout or check the Warwick website.

I've looked after it well and it is essentially mint once it's had a wipe down and maybe some new strings. It comes with a Warwick gig bag and a folder with lots of tools, clothes, pictures and other crap in.

Pricewise looking for GBP 950 ovno.

You can view it if you like, just get in touch. The bass is in Norwich.

Thanks guys - take it easy.
