1.
+1

Any of the markbass CMD range will be right up your street =]
+ another 1.

I was feeling in a rut a few months back and a bit bored with pussy footing around other members of my band (probably pretty much all down to a mild relapse on the arthritis front) to the extent that for the first time in 30 years of gigging I honestly felt as if I had had enough and if it all caved in I wouldn't really care either way. Then the drugs started working again, I sold the Trace combo, bought a SUB 5 (which was REALLY out of left field and not part of the plan at all), and got the Markbass CMD 121H and jumped right back in the saddle again.

The 121H is a cracking amp, weighs nothing but sounds great. Only problem for you would be keeping it quiet at home. We had a rehearsal last night and even with the master down around 9 o'clock it was a bit on the loud side :)

  2. Is a SUB much lighter than a 'Ray?

Compared to my Wal the SUB 5 weighs nothing at all!?

+1 for the Comfort Strap and if it gets really bad you could try a Slider strap (which goes over both shoulder & crosses at the back), or even a Dare strap which looks like it does much the same thing.

I have only used a Slider strap, needing something to spread the weight before I had my left shoulder replaced. The Dare looks like it would put the guitar in a better playing position. I found the Slider pulled the bass round a bit so that it was a slighty awkward (make that different to what I was used to) position, BUT it meant I could carry on gigging!!

  3.
im coming up with a cunning plan as we speak
I've run dry on those after a couple of GAS attacks in recent months. Did have one for a 5 string Wal recently but then realised it wasn't that cunning & would lead to a severe ear bashing from Mrs W :)

  4.
I didn't realise anyone actually placed their highest until the last seconds! As has been pointed out it gives people time to go away and think about bidding more.
I don't. I let a sniper do it for me and warn me if what I had set as a max bid is beaten sooner.

So I have the chance to

withdraw the snipe before the end if I change my mind

increase the max if my highest bid gets beaten - the sniper sends an email to warn the max bid you set has been exceeded

not get drawn into / carried away in a bidding war - unless I particularly want to

don't show my hand too soon, and

as a result probably not get bid up by going on early
I have sat and watched a couple of auctions for my stuff do nothing for 7/10 days only for all hell to break loose in the final 5 minutes. And that often seems to be the way in a lot of auctions, nothing for days then a large amount of activity right at the death.

  5.
Quite bizarre ... presumably it was first sold with the accompanying accessories :-

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Westone-5-string-Snake...1QQcmdZViewItem

... also puts Jens Ritter's 'Lounge-Lizard' finish in perspective !...
Interesting, actually looks quite nice in the photos - not nice enough for a bid though :)

  6.
OK reading into this, the M-Audio PCI card looks ideal...remember this is just for very basic recording. I can achieve an awful lot in Audition, which I know backwards.
    P
Turnkey have the M-Audio Audiophile 192 in their Clearout section although bizarrly that appears to be more expensive than their normal price.

For a few quid more they do an EMU bundle that has the same ins & outs plus a load of extra sounds in the bundle if you want to add more, and effects patching included - though when I have tried to utilise this through Tracktion my machine (3 mhz & max 2 gb ram) could not handle it. If it is the same as the one I bought a few months back you need 2 PCI slots as there is a main card & daughter board.

Both of them have connections on the card rather than breakout boxes, which can be a bit of a pain unless you leave everything permanently wired

  7. Oh good grief Al, as they say on all good exam courses "read the feckin question!!!"

You've got the Pods & the software - DOH!!! So as before push it through the Pods & USB. If you want to noodle along to stuff GearBox should let you do that, and hear the track / Drum Machine all through the headphones on the POD.

Using the POD ASIO & USB should also allow you to record stuff while listening to tracks on playback with low latency & looking at Audition you can track plenty of stuff.

Probably once you are in Audition & with a Pod plugged into the USB with up to date Line6 drivers installed (download & install the Line6 Monkey - free - then start it up with the Pod attached to find what updates are available) you will be able to set Audition to record & playback through (Bass) Pod ASIO somewhere in preferences.

Use the Pod set to the DI setting (ie no models) to get vocals in and Bod for the bass.

Changing from Pod to Bod will almost certainly require you to dive into Auditions preferences to change these to Bass Pod ASIO. And if you want to mix on speakers rather than headphones then change the setting to the internal soundcard.

So really you are down to possibly throwing some money at a better soundcard some time down the line with a better selection of ins & outs rather than a couple of 1/8 inch stereo jacks

  8.
Of course none of this actually stops anyone from shill bidding and driving up the price, though it does stop them from retracting a bid. If the person shilling is the highest bidder, no matter when you put your bid in you'll still end up paying more than you should have done.
Except that they have to assume that snipes will come in at the very end and get a bid in early enough to account for that and drive it to nearer the price they want without having to set a reserve or start price - at least that's the way I look at it.

It's a shame one has to take that view, and use things like snipers to try to get around it but there you go, that's life (as Esther used to say)

  9.
its the concience thing that would always get me.....

I have started looking at items and bidding within the last few seconds, if I feel that the auction is valid, allowing me to observe the bidding trend.
I see what you are saying in the earlier example, but often bids steaming in right at the death will be things like AuctionSniper diving on as instructed.

It does cost a bit for a winning bidders fee, but saves the aggro of sitting watching all hell break loose at the end just as your internet connection decides to have a go slow. You set your max bid in advance and it does the rest for you. So effectively what you are doing, but a machine places the bid for you in the last few seconds (good if it ends in the middle of the night and you do not want to sit up for it, and should avoid the worst of being bid up by going on early).

  10. You might try Audacity from HERE or generally find it on computer magazine cover disks. It is free and you can build up multitracks within it, but actually mixing them would probably be a trial as there is no form of automation.

I have used Mackie Traction 2 for a while now, upgrading to v3 recently. V2 you can pick up now for about £30 HERE

I find Tracktion really easy to use and logical in the way it works across the screen from inputs on the left to outputs on the right, and it includes automation for mixing.

Perhaps consider getting (asking for Christmas) for one of the baby Pocket Pods that came out recently. They seem to be about £70 universally and will give you both modelling and a USB connection to the PC, so no need to worry about getting signal in through an 1/8 inch jack socket on your sound card (or motherboard if it is on board sound). You ought to be able to select a DI only setting to get the bass in by the same means

  11. Not sure where you are, but you could try Amps & Bits, Worthing. It really is like stepping back in time. I wandered round a while back thinking "had one of those....and those....and those...etc etc"

  12.
JUST gigged in York...they loved us,fed us,bought our drinks, and paid over the usual rate, and booked us for more...several more.

afterwards,it was the MOST genuine audience reaction Ive ever had,no just pissed up "you were great" ,it was said with heart..and a handshake, and a pat on the back.

We were not super great, but functional,my achievement tonight, was that I did my 1st whole/entire gig on a 5 string,(and am now under direct orders to use it always from bandmembers) so thats a mountain climbed (my 1st fretted 5,bought 3 days ago!!).

I floated back down the A64/A1 in sheer bliss.....Thankyou God,they dont come often, but when they do......!
Nice one. Always good when that happens, and a new 5er as well. I still have to change back to the 4 for one number after 4 or 5 gigs. I shall get there one day.

Of course now you won't be able to sleep for the adrenaline rush :) still who cares that's what its all about

  13.
Hi All,

Does anyone know where there is a music shop that Stocks Mark Bass equipment in the south east (not inside London) preferably in or near Berkshire?

    Thanks
Well I was going to say GAK in Brighton, but that's a bit of a trek from Berks, still have that to be going on with. They do keep a fair selection of MB amps & combos normally

  14.
I am not 100% sure but I don't think the Bass PODxt can be upgraded with FX Junkie.
Unless I have missed an update I don't think the BOD xt can take any packs. It certainly doesn't seem so from the Line6 site. Shame

  15. I can heartily recommend the MarkBass CMD121H covered HERE.

Incredibly light, but a good solid sound and plenty loud enough for rehearsal / pub gigs in a "classic rock covers" situation even on its own.

  16. What is your ultimate goal having got the bass into the PC and what sort of cash were you thinking of?

I know you are talking soundcard, but you might keep an eye out for a Line6 Bass Pod (XT) on fleabay. That gives you amp modelling, gets the bass into the PC by USB and is a headphone practice amp. It's a while since I had mine hooked up to the PC, but as I recall it doesn't work with the Guitarport or Gearbox (which allow you to play along to tracks all through the headphones), so as an alternate you could look for a Pod XT and use the DI patch with no amp models.

Audacity has been mentioned already as cheap (as in free) but good software. I use it a lot for editing audio, and managed to add and mix a pair of harmony guitar (sorry!!!) lines to a live track from my band (on the MySpace) quite easily

  17.
Walman chap, I feel sorry for you, normally HDD's are a piece of cake to install.

Even if you have to bodge where they're sitting, normally just a case of:
Remove case panels, set the jumpers to suit (normally slave if it's an extra IDE, if SATA no jumpers at all) fit and screw in HDD, attach cables + minor moving about, put case back together and bingo.

S' a bit off you had to fettle with the BIOS though to get it to find the drive, I've never ever had that problem.
Precisely!! I have installed at least two HDD's previously no probs, this time it was just such a bloody fight.

Actually I didn't have to change the BIOS in the end as the drive did eventually autodetect once the data cable was switched to a different socket

  18.
Hello
A friend of mine's got a Wal-don't know what model.Lots of basses for sale in my area?Is there something I should know?
    Iain
There have been a few eBay items turning up in the Orkneys (including a Wal) but all seemed to be scams - no Paypal just bank transfer, sellers registered the day the bass was listed, suspiciously low starting prices considering the items offered, etc etc

    Anyway, welcome!!

We now have a checking source for any new listings :)

  19.
It took you half a day do fit a HDD?
Well half a day is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration including

a number of "sod this" moments when I just walked away (including a "sod it I'll get an external box this is just too much hassle"),

eventually getting it installed - all right I looked at the manual again & realised the front had to come off the PC as well as the side (yes I know, RTFM, and don't even start on that male failing "I've done this before. Piece of **** I don't need the manual/map/instructions"),

in the process of inserting the drive it knocked the cable off the card reader in the slot above leading to another waste of time

getting the HD back out,

then the card reader,

then reattaching the cable to that

getting the HD back in making sure that it did not happen again

farting around trying to get it recognised in BIOS once it was in, and yes perhaps I would have had to with the Mac. That is/was never my point

eventually having to switch the data cable to a different socket on the MB,

not being entirely convinced that the power was getting through at one point so swapping power cables around, :)

then waiting for it to format - which I accept is not a problem of the machine, just a fact of life wherever the drive resides, but I had new software to install AND I WANTED TO PLAY!!!
Bitter experience had already told me to get the drive in and attached, but not put the side back on until the machine fired up and recognised the drive as there were bound to be issues - and I was right (see BIOS & power above).
What were you doing? Machining out a cradle?
Well almost as there was no proper second drive cradle, just a slot where the floppy drive could live, so it was a bit of a bodge , now you come to mention it.

And again I say my point really was that with the Mac the side comes off, the drive slots in, you attach 2 cables to the drive, shut the side & there you go. No fighting through a sea of cables

Again by way of pictorial reference I proffer

    PC - Mac

    QED

That is really all it was

  20.
The first post got it wrong on the hardware differences (there aren't many), and your post gives Apple credit they haven't earned and don't deserve.
Blimey I did start a storm didn't I :)

I wasn't talking about hardware or software issues, but my moan seems to have blown into the usual polar opposite arguments between afficianados of PC's & Macs.

The point of the original post was that the PC (indeed all PC's I have ever been inside to work on) have been a mess of cables and a right fiddle to work on, as compared to the inside of the Mac, which is a place of calm and on the face of it a breeze to get at & work on, hence the comparative pictures. That's all! It came after a sweaty, sweary 1/2 day trying to fit a new hard drive in the PC to dedicate to recording.
