1. I bought this on Basschat last April but although I think it’s a lovely bass, I’ve used it very little, so it’s time to move it on. 2. Sadly I don’t use this beautiful bass enough to justify hanging onto it, though I did use it on the Jack Bruce Tribute Concert in October 2015. It was made to my specifications so it has additional features compared to a standard Afterburner I. There are a couple of minute dings to the lacquer on the rear of the body, which are too small to easily photograph. I will drive up to 100 miles to hand it over, in preference to shipping it. 4. The bass is still available but two other people are very interested in it.

7. Levinson Blade B-2 Tetra Classic Bass (fretted) with Neuser NFS fretless system 2003 Body Wood: Light Ash Neck Wood: Hard Rock Maple Fingerboard: Rosewood Fingerboard Tuners: Levinson/Gotoh Tuners Pickups: JS-2 Alnico Single coils Colour: See Thru Red Levinson publicity: “This has been our Bass Standard since 1989 when it won Innovative Instrument of the Year in Italy. Whether you are looking for vintage growl, thundering mids or piano wire slap, the Tetra Bass will deliver. The BVSC-3 on-board electronics gives you total tonal flexibility – no matter what your music style. The Tetra Bass took the best character of classic basses and added more of what you need: more playability, more versatility, more tone – and more style.” NFS publicity: “The NFS (Neuser Fretless System) is a truly innovative design. Inspired by Dominique Di Piazza, Neuser Basses designed a switchable bridge that enables you to produce both a fretted and a fretless sound with an ordinary fretted electric bass. The NFS bridge can transform your ordinary bass into something extraordinary. Especially in studio or on stage the NFS works like a dream. No more retuning and switching between instruments, now you can have it all in one! The NFS greatly improves the performance of your bass and your playing. Imagine that you can learn to play fretless over a night and its not more complicated than to play a regular fretted bass.” It's an individual-string type bridge (i.e. one bridge unit for each string) that has moves another saddle-type piece so that the string vibrates against it. You slide the cover and it alters the sound, simulating a fretless. What it does is allow the string to vibrate across the bridge fulcrum point when engaged, sort of sitar-like. Neuser NFS fretless system demo: https://www.youtube....h?v=bYPHZlwLP3s On the video, some of it shows that you can keep most of the strings as normal, and for example just have the ‘fretless’ sound on the G string by sliding the bridge unit only on that string. It is quite fiddly to adjust, and it’s never going to be possible to have every note on all strings sounding equally ‘fretless-y’, but the advantages of always being in tune and the convenience of not having to carry a second bass, to perhaps only use on one or two songs, outweigh the drawbacks. I don’t use it often enough to justify hanging on to the bass. The small plate covering the truss rod adjustment point is missing - it’s possible it had my name on it! The original bridge is included. http://s57.photobuck...F5733.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5715.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5714.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5713.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5712.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5711.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5734.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...F5735.jpg.html] http://s57.photobuck...897e3.jpg.html]
8. Yes, on Slip Of The Tongue - too fast, wrong key (A instead of G), no bass interest (it's my opinion that Steve Vai did everything apart from drums and vocals on that album, though I can't prove it). In recent Whitesnake it's back down to G, or even lower, to help the vocals.
9. I've re-recorded basslines for some Whitesnake tracks, with the intention of them being analysed for an article or web feature by a friend of mine, Oliver Poschmann, who currently plays bass in Motown The Musical in the West End of London. We rather let things slide, and the project needs to be reactivated. I re-recorded FFYL, but I'm not too happy with it, both sound- and playing-wise. I realise that people would like a video, but I very much doubt that I could play the track note-for note in that situation, though maybe showing how particular sections are played would be OK. I just don't like poor quality teaching videos, which is most likely what it would be when I haven't done any previously.
10. I can see I'll have to do a note-for-note demonstration! Although when I've played it in the last 15 years, I've tried to stick to the recorded version, when I recorded the song the fills were just improvised, so on another take they would have been different. If it's played too fast, which is often the case, some of the fills become impossible to play properly, which is frustrating. Although I am not an expert jazz, blues or funk player, I had enough of those influences to bring some of that to my rock playing, particularly in 1978-82 Whitesnake, as the songs allowed for interesting bass parts. When the songs don't permit that style of playing, which is mostly the case, I have to be more straight-ahead. Neil
