Recording.

Hey guys.

I want to be able to record my bass into my Laptop, and I'm guessing the best way would be an External Audio Interface thing?

I really have no idea with how these work and how to identify whether it will work or not.

If I bought THIS, would I need anything else? I've heard that I might need a Pre-amp.

I just want to be able to plug my bass into the External Device and then from the device into the Laptop via USB or whatever. And then I hope Garageband will pick it up as recording?

Could someone please help to answer my questions? Thanks in advance.

That device is designed for guitarist, so a preamp should not be necessary. It's a simple plug and play solution designed for technophobes :) A preamp would only really be useful if you had a bass with particularly low output. But for basic recording, this thing would be ideal. I'm guessing it comes with recording software too that will make your life so much more easier with loads of preset amp and bass modeling algorithms that should help you get the sound you want with minimum effort.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds great. I am very much a technophobe, scared to mess things up. And yes it comes with recording software, although I have Garageband already.

If you have Garageband, then you can do it a lot cheaper than that, I use one of these, got it for about £25:

Another option - albeit a bit more expensive - is to go for a Stealthplug. It allows you to plug your guitar/bass directly into a USB port, and also features a convenient headphones out socket.

It comes bundled with a couple of useful pieces of software:

- Amplitube 2.0, which simulates different amps / cabinets, and has some FX built in
- Traction 2, which is a useable sequencing / recording program

So while it may be on the expensive side, you get some quite decent software with it which IMO makes it worth while.
