dryfjord Posted June 7, 2010 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Hello all! My first post on basschat, hope someone can help! I have an Peavey Cirrus 4 BXP. Had it 5 years, very light use (only home practice), been perfect up till now. Problem is that it's started making clicking/scratching/popping sounds (really difficult to describe!) when plugged in to my amp, and the guitar isn't being touched at all. Sounds a bit like some sort of internal short? It can be fine for say a minute or so, then it starts crackling then it's ok again. Anyway, tried my other bass in the same amp, no problems there, so can't be the amp. Tried 3 different leads, so can't be that. Tried different batteries, and made sure the connectors are tight, so can't be that. Had the other panel off the back, tried waggling all of the wiring in turn (including trying to waggle the lead in the socket), can't get it to duplicate the effect. All the wiring looks fine...... It looks like maybe the preamp unit itself is at fault and maybe needs replacing?? If so does anyone know if it is available (in the UK) and if so how much for, or is there anything else I could try out? Can anyone recommend a repairer in Hull?? escholl Posted June 7, 2010 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Try cleaning the output jack, even if it's just by plugging and unplugging the cable a dozen times, sometimes they can cause this issue. Also try moving the pots back and forth over the full extent of their range, again maybe a dozen times or so. If there's no crackling while doing that, then it's not any of the pots. It could also be a dry joint on the preamp board itself, a quick and simple fix if you're handy with a soldering iron. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One of the old ones (although never used before) was actually out of date so maybe the voltage was just down enough to cause it? Or maybe in connecting up the new ones I disturbed a connector that's now OK? Anyway I'll see how it goes for now and keep fingers crossed (when they aren't playing!)
