  1. Hello all; Currently I play a Westfield Jazz with flatwounds and a Peavey Cirrus 4BXP through a nice little Laney RB2. Just practicising at home at the moment but always dreaming about other possibilities! The Westfield is "ok" but some of the frets are lifting a bit and the neck may be slightly warped, ideally I'd replace it. The Peavey is in some ways great to play for someone with relatively small hands (narrow neck) but not in others (35" scale so wider fret spacings). Many years ago - about 1978 or 79 I think - I started out with a CMI Jazz copy and a Selmer treble n Bass 100 valve head! The CMI from memory wasn't up to much, I seem to think it was big and heavy but can't remember much. Sold long ago. The Selmer was of course brilliant, played through 2 homemade 12 or 15" cabs. Bought it for £50 (?) and it worked perfectly. (The shop had 2 of them for sale at the same price). My guitarist mate bought a 50W Selmer at the same time or just after which he had some bother with, so quite often we both played through the same amp! It was great practising in my mates parents' garage in the mid winter, warming my hands over the amp! In a massive moment of madness, when I moved away from the Edinburgh area where I lived in 1982, I sold the Selmer and its 2 cabs. Think I got £130 for the lot but maybe less? Didn't get into bass playing again til I got the Westie in about 1997. Just the other day I saw a similar amp on ebay for about £500.......... And I could have had 2 of them
  2. Can I add a further question to this topic please? As a general rule then, should the truss rod be adjusted (if needed) after slacking off the strings or with them tuned up? Sorry for being thick....... better safe than sorry!
  3. Thanks for the suggestions guys! I tried another new set of batteries and so far it looks good. One of the old ones (although never used before) was actually out of date so maybe the voltage was just down enough to cause it? Or maybe in connecting up the new ones I disturbed a connector that's now OK? Anyway I'll see how it goes for now and keep fingers crossed (when they aren't playing!)
  4. Hello all! My first post on basschat, hope someone can help! I have an Peavey Cirrus 4 BXP. Had it 5 years, very light use (only home practice), been perfect up till now. Problem is that it's started making clicking/scratching/popping sounds (really difficult to describe!) when plugged in to my amp, and the guitar isn't being touched at all. Sounds a bit like some sort of internal short? It can be fine for say a minute or so, then it starts crackling then it's ok again. Anyway, tried my other bass in the same amp, no problems there, so can't be the amp. Tried 3 different leads, so can't be that. Tried different batteries, and made sure the connectors are tight, so can't be that. Had the other panel off the back, tried waggling all of the wiring in turn (including trying to waggle the lead in the socket), can't get it to duplicate the effect. All the wiring looks fine...... It looks like maybe the preamp unit itself is at fault and maybe needs replacing?? If so does anyone know if it is available (in the UK) and if so how much for, or is there anything else I could try out? Can anyone recommend a repairer in Hull?? The dealer I bought the guitar from is out of business several years ago. Any ideas/suggestions very much appreciated! Thank you.
