Wiring diagram for adding a series/parallel switch here - http://www.guitar-mod.com/wiring/j_series.gif

Thread from TalkBass about the J series mod here - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-262.html

When in series both pickups are 'in circuit' and on one vol control so you lose the tonal nuances of adjusting bridge/neck pickup balance

Gives a much beefier sound and more output but a bit one dimensional if just hardwired in series. Adding a series/parallel switch gives you all the options

I've done it to my Warmoth Jazz/P Frankenstein. Definitely worth doing, gives another option. Gives an almost P-Bass thump to a jazz.

Used this diagram myself Series/Parallel Jazz Bass , but used a push-pull tone pot as opposed to volume, as I wanted it out of the way. It's a reversible mod too.

what will i lose in tonal options by doing this?

thanks
It will give you +6dB more grunt, but low end? It does not generate any more that what is already there; chances you not have more low end but less. You'd perceive more low end technically in a parallel setting with some mids cut due to the phase cancellations in a typical jazz bass pick up spacing. Phase interactions depend on the spacing of the pickups and the electric level of output from each pickup.
