JackieMoon
Hi All, Have a budget of about 200 for a cheap fretless. Was looking at either the Vintage VJ96 Icon or the Squier Vintage Modified Fretless. What do people reckon is the best bang for the buck and what experiences do you have with both? Cheers, JM

Plux_the_Duck
The Squier is awesome!!!
Soloshchenko
Go Squier. The new stuff is pretty faultless.
jimbobothy
Go with the squier, the basses are very good value for money and the sound you get from them is nice. I would get some half or flat wounds on it as the ebanol fingerboard does mark fairly easily. Pickups are also good on them.
OutToPlayJazz
The Squier is the one to go for. It plays like butter and sounds great. The Vintage lacks something in playability. I played a couple of them and put them straight down again. Nasty things.
throwoff
Agreed Squier all the way! I'm sorry but Vintage are just not good instruments Despite what the reviews might keep claiming recently (in the same mags that also have 5 or 6 Vintage ad's that month...... ) Edited April 14, 2010 by throwoff
Malc62
Go with the Squier Vintage Modified Fretless - the "new" price is a little over your budget, but either scare up a few extra quid or scout around for a used one, like I did. I was happy with mine, as was the chap I sold it to (I needed the space). I've no experience of Vintage (the brand) instruments so I can't comment there. JackieMoon
Thanks fellow bc'ers I have a few questions about playing fretless but will pop those in a new thread in theory and technique! Cheers, JM
