Need an amp now that I've got the bass

Hello again!

I've sorted myself out with a bass now I need an amp. I have a £300 limit.

I'm looking for a head unit rather than a combo (renting cabs at practice rooms and borrowing cabs at shows means that's all I need). I'm really not too familiar with what's good in terms of bass amps. I've got a Sound City L120 in the repair shop, well, saying that my mate has had it for over a year now, I think he might have disappeared! What's good in this price range? Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Ampeg (although these seem very expensive)? Help!

Hartke LH500 is £300 new and is a superb amp head. However, I'd suggest that you be very, very certain that you don't need a cab.

S.P.

Relying on rental/borrowed cabs is a bit of a risky game to play.

You could end up with a cab that is the wrong impedence or has far too low of a RMS rating for the head you use. It only takes playing a gig where the other bands will not let you use their cab and you can't play.

300 would be best spent second hand. You could pick up a nice Ashdown MAG head and cab, Laney head and cab or something a bit wierder/older

Per example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Laney-Bass-Amp-Stack...=item414e3d32a4

Thats a huge amount of amp for a small amount of money, you can often find good deals like that second hand.

That one's on my watched items list already :)

Yeh half stacks in some ways actually end up easier to move than a big combo I always find, especially in this price range where Watts are cheap but weights are high.

Have a hunt around second hand you will find a hell of a half stack for 300 if you time it right, personally If i was in the market I would BIN that laney

Sharing cabs at gigs is very very common practice. Just make sure your impedence matches the impedence of the cab you're plugging into. Most are a standard 4 or 8 ohm from what I've seen. I'd be very annoyed if we were told by a promoter that it's a shared backline at a gig but the bass player then refuses to let anyone use his cab, assuming the promoter had asked beforehand.

Squiddon, you have a Sound City and haven't seen it in a year?!?! Get on that case immediately.

Yeah, it's with Vman at spartan audio at the moment. When I get it back I'm thinking of part-ex-ing it for a refurbed 120 from Electric Ladyland, hence why I was asking if they had an email. Not something I could explain very well over the phone.

There's an Ashdown MAG 300w head with matching 4x10 cab available from the Bass Merchant, think that includes postage for £300 the pair:

You'd struggle to better that for your price range.
