i recently bought a Fender 300PS from 1977. As told to me, the 6550 run very hot cause there were built for 600V and the Fender runs them at 700V. So, if you are not able to select the best from hundreds of tubes it is better to use KT88. Is that also your oppinion?
Which tubes are your choice, which brand? Are there any Fedner 300PS fans here?

According to the datasheets you are right about the max plate voltage being 600 volts for a 6550, for the KT88 the plate voltage max is 800 volts. If they can be interchanged in the circuit, as they often can be, then I would go for the KT88's. Can't recommend any specific brands though, as I've not much experience there.
