Eeee. If it had been a beater of a bass I'd have been peeved but not too bothered, however the op's bass is a Sandburg, it's not a beater.

It is still a tool but you're meant to look after tools to some degree, someone managing to do serious buckle damage (down to the wood? ffs) to that sort of bass when they're know it's someone else's is out of order imo. It's different when you do the damage yourself though as it's yours.

I'd get a quote for the repair off a top rated luthier and demand cash upfront from the mate who damaged it. I wouldn't expect damage on any of my tools or possessions that I lend to family/friends just through sheer negligence whether it's a bass, guitar, car, garden tools, power tools, clothes etc...
