Aah, to be old enough to remember when discussions about Fender's 70s QC always achieved consensus that a high percentage of their basses were dogs.  Not the dogs.  Now they're considered vintage.

I am that bass player, bought a P bass new 1977 (student grants were amazing things).  It was good if somewhat weighty.  Just bought a Cort Action Junior s/h £100. With the benefit of 50 years of bass manufacturing improvement  and my changing perspectives I am just amazed how good it is.  It will be gigged as no1. There are many outstanding basses in the marketplace, at some point I will also have to offload mine (some good, some interesting and some tat) as age marches on.  I have had the fun from them,  the potential financial 'loss'  due to marketplace slowness is not that great averaged over time. I have even give some kit away to 'worthy' recipients and my sense of relief was most welcome.

I just about managed to buy a Squier P-bass with my grant in the late 90s. Tempus fugit I suppose. I do recall seeing a 70s Jazz in a second hand shop in Leeds in 1998 that would have only set me back £750 - at 20 years old I guess they wouldn't have been considered "vintage" yet, just heavy. I still have and love that Squier though.
