John McAuley
I recently rescued a bass guitar from a skip, a 1982 Westone thunder 1 which I can tell in its day was well loved and probably Gigâd with. Surprisingly it doesnât need a lot of work to get it back up to playing condition again. but Iâve noticed that it has an E string in place of the A string so its E E D G but tuned correctly E, (A,) D, G was this some old school was of getting a better sound back in the 80âs/90âs or just something that a Westie player would do.
Reggaebass
Welcome John đ, nice find, Iâve never tried that myself, how does the A string sound with an E in its place
Velarian
Sounds more like the original A string broke and whoever replaced it didnât have one to hand so just put whatever they could find on it. If they didnât care enough about the bass to chuck it in the skip they probably wouldnât care about correct string gauge.
John McAuley
The guy had recently bought the house was stripping it out and found 2 guitars in the loft, didnât want them saw no use or monetary value in either of them, âjust take themâ he said. âTheyâll be covered in house bricks soonâ so I took them both. A fender Stratocaster and the Westone.

John McAuley
Fender fixed up and sold it didnât survive totally unmarked but after I finished working on it didnât look too bad. The Westone was in its case so that took all the skip damage fender done first thatâs why Iâve only just put the Westone on marketplace for sale.
