I've replaced them with Nordstrand singles- I was curious and I liked what I heard.

Hardly proper conversation over tea and biscuits, but you could haggle and purchase the best deal. Money is often excellent motivation for decision.

Why not buy Russ's Audere pre (which is for sale further down) AND these?

You could have both for a few quid more than a J-retro.

How do the Nordies sound different to the LF's?

I've just taken my J-retro out as I seemed to be bypassing it so much of the time. I think I prefer the passive tone.

I know what you're saying about the J-Retro- if I was recording I would bypass it for that classic jazz sound, but my live sound seems to benefit from it engaged.
For me it's the same with the p'ups. Recorded, I actually prefer the LF's but live the Nords are a bit tighter whilst not sounding modern.
To my ears the difference is mostly in the bridge pickup- a bit more honk and poke in the Nords which when blended with the neck gives a more defined note (which IMO works better on the 5 string- I felt the B was a bit flabby live, especially compared to my 55-94 which has an exceptionally well-defined
