D & G strings very quiet

If it were the A and D that were quiet then I'd also suggest angling the P pickup so that the poles are nearer the strings.

However, you say D and G are quiet and, crucially, lacking in punch. Well,28 years is quite a long time and there's a chance that one of the pickups is faulty - either magnet or windings can develop problems.

If you know someone suitably qualified, get them to check the output using a multimeter or scope.
