cd_david Posted November 25, 2016 Share Posted November 25, 2016 1978/79 Factory maple fretless Precision. This bass is the amalgamation of a 78 ash body and 79 maple neck. Done so to match the resonance of the body and neck timber as Fender should do in the first place (as per Sadowsky Lakland et al) The bass was put together with this in minds with period neck and bodies and built as a matched pair. Resonant and vocal doesn't go halfway to describe this fretless. The neck was dressed and refinished by Martin Sims and is a perfect combination of restoration and refurbished with original lacquer and wood to the headstock and back of the neck but the fingerboard was dressed and refinished. The body when I got it was finished in a 'Sting' see through red but the original finish appeared to be a burst so I had Dave Wilson DWilson Guitars (finishes Stefan Sobel instruments and mark Knopflers strats ) refinish it in his usual immaculate mirror like finish. The bass is loaded with original 70s machines, pickup and circuit. Non original parts are pick guard, bridge (badass II) and case, although a 78 original case it is not original to the bass. Sound wise this bass is everything you'd want from a fretless and far from what you'd expect from a maple boarded fretless. It's warm and rich with a singing sustain and plays like the easiest fretted bass you've played.
