Great, so we got the worry out of the way - please explain how so I can avoid to do so in the future.

In the meantime, I will change the topic to "help a foreign newbie" :-)

So, I will go with the metal polish for the bridge and volume knobs. Contact cleaner for electronics, steel wool (not against the grain) for fretboard and then mixture of oils meant for that.
Will also take the bass to the local shop to get some advice on the condition of the frets.

That should do the job.
