Buying Guide

I'm surprised that there isn't an amp/cab/combo buying guide among the pinned threads. Something like this: http://www.music-gea...ifier_guide.php

Hmmm.... Online bass amp buying guides seem to be pitched a bit simply. And this one is very inconsistent compared to the previous one. You need 400 watts of power to rehearse with a drummer? http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Bass-Guitar-Amp-Buying-Guide-/10000000177635297/g.html

I think this section of the forum is an amp/cab/combo buying advice place.
You say what sort of criteria & folk pitch with what they've used or tried, meaning that your quest is easier.
All you have to do is try out all the options given (& any others that you find) & see which you prefer. :)

I don't know what I need, but it needs to be as transportable as possible. I may end up moving it around in a trailer attached to a bicycle (no joke). I'd need to be able to compete with a drum kit, but most likely wouldn't be gigging. I would like to have something that leaves the possibility of small gigs open.

My price constraints are 'how long is a piece of string'. I limit my spending on a per month basis, so if I want to spend more, I wait longer.

At present I like the idea of a 1x12 or 2x10 combo, with about 200 watts. I'd like the ability to add an extra cab in the future, as I think that would cover anything I'm likely to do. Looking at prices, it seems it would be better to wait until something comes up in the amps for sale section. There are some bass amps there that look interesting, but in the wrong part of the country and I have no budget yet. (But I'm thinking about things - so seeing what goes for what is useful).

I would prefer good note definition over and above absolute power, but would like a low B string to be handled well. As I have extended range basses a switchable high horn/tweeter would be good. Hence perhaps a well designed 2x10 combo might be a good idea.

The bass amp I have access to for experiments is a Laney RB-7 2x10, but I don't own it. I only have a four string bass here at work, but think that a 5 string sounded fine through it when I tried that. That's a 300W amp, I think.

I'm not sure what amp would sound best to me. I was interested in a Peavey someone was selling here that was able to model a variety of amps. I think that I'd prefer something moderately transparent, where I can add amp modelling in front of it. I'm thinking that a solid state amp is probably suitable. I can add a valve pre-amp stomp box if I really want to.

Somewhere in the ballpark if bought second hand? http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Gallien_Krueger_MB_112-II_Bass_Combo_Amp/GK-MB112-II?CAWELAID=1834946507&CAGPSPN=pla&gclid=CNXQ4caimsECFUrpwgod2VMAjA
