Meet Despair

Hi All, first time I've posted in build diary so fingers crossed, so here's a bit of background. This is Despair, she was my first ever bass a Ibanez SR800 I believe from the nineties. Originally finish was in Gloss Black however I let my younger brother borrow my bass bag to put his BC RIch Warlock guitar in and unknown to me at the time it's pointy edges put a nice whole in the bottom of my bass bag, this led to my bass being unprotected and a nice big chunk of the black paint being ripped off of the body. This led to in my youth stripping the paint off, staining it blue and burning the body with a blow torch, I also stripped half of the paint off of the neck but the Ibanez paint is nasty stuff and took an age so gave up half way.

Sooo on to the present she's the only bass I have left currently as I've sold all of my other gear and thought rather than buying something new for now it's time to spend some money on the bass I've owned for an age and has always served me well even though it's been pretty neglected. So here's some pics as she currently stands.

What is the plan for body and neck finishing and getting the rest of the black off the neck?

EMG PJ's - on my shopping list too so I'm watching this thread to see how it all comes together.

Cheers,
Rich

Not sure where to start lol, the rest of the paint is coming off of the neck, it's a nice three piece maple underneath, it's going to be a Lord of the Rings influenced bass so body is going to be sanded for now but the plan eventually is to paint it an off white and stick a Middle Earth map on the front, burn it and distress it a bit and lacquer over it. Fingerboard is coming off and being replaced with a wenge one and planning on doing the one ring inscription (never done this before so will be a bit of a challenge lol. Bridge is being replaced with a mono rail system I think and a few other bits here and there. Fair bit to do lol.

Bit of an update, all sanded down and EMG's installed and new jack socket plate arrived, I've decided to go for the aftermarket telecaster style plate rather than the original long and skinny jack, means me drilling out a bigger hole and recess which is fine, one thing I'd not considered though is that the threads for the jack are a tiny bit too big for the threads on the jack socket, not by much but enough to not let it go in, anyone got any ideas?

Take a visit to your nearest jobbing engineer and they will be able to run a tap through the mounting plate to match the thread on the jack socket, or if you know the size of the thread on the jack socket, you could buy a cheap tap & die set and do it yourself. You could also try opening out the hole in the jack plate, but looking at the shape of it it might be difficult to fasten down the nut on the jack socket.

Have you considered a jack socket like this?

Considered maybe trying to file it back slightly inside but worried about ruining the threads as I want to screw the jack in rather than use the nut at the end, nut on the end would drive my ocd crazy lol

If the threads are a different size, no amount of filing will help, the only option is to get a correct size thread cut using the appropriate tap.

Was literally the tiniest amount that it needed reducing by, was almost there but just not quite enough if that makes sense, filed it down on the basis that if I go to far I can always epoxy the jack to the plate, worked out though with filing so is all good, managed to bore the whole out as well so that the socket fits in the body. Pics to follow in a while.

Well here we go, had to lots of faffing but got there in the end, filed the threads to the jack socket slightly, re bored the hole in the bass for the jack socket to fit into and all fits nicely, I really like the way it looks over the stock jack.

Not seen that style before (maybe I don't get out much) It looks good. You've done a neat job there.

Think if I remember rightly they are an after market telecaster jack socket but an internal one, just very much like the look and style of it, thanks I'm really pleased at how it turned out, still a way to go yet though lol
