I'm talking to Hunt53bass about his balalaika contrabass: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/208691-contra-bass-balalaika-for-sale/

What are my chances of being able to mount a pickup on that small sound-hole do you think?

Assuming it's a possibility, what type of pickup does the panel recommend?

When I had an acoustic bass, these came highly recommended (and not made any more): Fishman rare earth acoustic bass pickups http://basschat.co.uk/topic/210996-fishmann-rare-earth-acoustic-bass-guitar-pickup/page__p__2123388#entry2123388

Its what i did when I had the Eko B3 gypsy style acoustic bass (oval soundhole meant no pickup would fit across). I had a problem with feedback at volume though which is why I moved it on. I fear the beast you are looking at might be similar unless you went for some kind of magnetic pickup which would of course make it sound more like a 'normal' bass
