If you HAVE to re-create it, then I too would use a bass for that section. I also have great confidence that your rendition will be SO much better than the original. Yes, the main bass part was "performed" using a Fairlight CMI - the daddy of digital sampling workstations but the part to which you allude was I believe, bassist Brad Lang.
