Pinball
Dean isn't a name I see around here much and but I'm hoping that someone can confirm that this is what I think it is. I couldn't find any information from searching. It's a Dean 5 Strnger. The previous owner said he thought it was a Dean Edge Improv from about 2001. I know that modern Dean Edge guitars are now at the cheap end of the market but my gut feeling is that its a quality designed guitar. It is in great condition with a great neck, nice sound and the finish seems excellent . The advert is still up on UK Gumtree at the moment so you should be able to see pictures here: http://www.gumtree.c...trade/102986186 Other details are a see-through Amber finish, the neck coninues for the length of the body, active EMG's, gold fittings, Schaller? tuners. The model number is 93981 and is says it was made in the Czech republic. I'm also making inquries on the Dean Forum. Any information would be much appreciated, including value-although I got it to play not sell. Cheers Ed Edited July 15, 2012 by Pinball
RhysP
It looks like an Improv 5 - any pictures of the neck/headstock? Has it got the "Talon" inlay at the 12th fret? Dean still make some lovely instruments but unfortunately, like BC Rich, they get classed as low end heavy metal guitars by people who have never seen or played the older US models. Pinball
Sorry no pictures other than the gumtree link yet. Yes it has a cutlass blade/talon shaped inlay on the 12th fret. No other dots or inlays. On the back of the headstock it also says "Dean Europe Custom Special" and below the serial number it says "Hand Crafted in the Czech Republic". Head stock is quilted amber colour, with the word Dean in a hand written style up the center. The head is kind of curvey with an uneven V in the top, gets a little thinner as you go down before getting wider at the lower tuning heads before slimming at the nut, which is brass. Re: Dean still make some lovely instruments but unfortunately, like BC Rich, they get classed as low end heavy metal guitars by people who have never seen or played the older US models. Same applies to Schecters Guitars , which I love dearly. I have got 3 beauties and have never considered upgrading because to me they are my favourites. Their Basses are good quality too but they aren't as strong on basses as they are on leads.. Thanks for the reply, I'll stick some dean pictures up when I get them. Note: Searches on Dean Improv 5 don't seem to turn up much information at all. There is a link to this sunburst version: http://www.deanguita...ees/shawnw.html Edited June 22, 2012 by Pinball

Pinball
That's the one. It pretty much answers all the things I was curious about. Wenge fingerbourd? is that good or bad I dunno. Shame the add isn't dated. Thanks M8
Kongo
Dean still make some lovely instruments but unfortunately, like BC Rich, they get classed as low end heavy metal guitars by people who have never seen or played the older US models.
Same with ESP / LTD and Ibanez in some respects. Although low end when some will cost you £2500 is no joke. Such a shame people forget an instrument doesn't play itself. :-P

Pinball
Lovely looking bass.
Thanks, It sounds good as well. It has quite a unique *"ringing growl" sound. It has a brass nut and I (accidentally) added to that by putting on slinky Ernie Balls. It is totally different to the bottomless sound of my TRB 1005. I think by good luck I have two very complementary and different bass guitars. Someone on the Dean forum posted 2001 prices and RRP was $1450, 3x the standard Edge bass. I have been watching out for others but haven't seen one come up with a set neck as yet. Also I have played one of the new Dean Edges. They are totally different beasts, competent enough but built to a tighter budget.
