Jaydee Roadie Active Bass for Sale

Hi,

I'll get straight to the point - I've joined Basschat mainly so that I can sale my Jaydee Roadie bass.

Here's the story.

I've had my Jaydee Roadie since about 1987-8, can't quite remember exactly when I bought it but it was about then from Musical Exchange in Birmingham, traded it for a odd Jaydee fretless headless boxbass!!!, a compressor and flanger pedal.

When I bought it someone had done a bit of a hatchet job on the back pickup and replaced the Jaydee pickup with a Reflex pickup. I struggled along with this set-up for a while as I didn't have enough cash to get it repaired at the time. Eventually, the pick-up gave out and I played with just the one pick-up.

I stopped playing bass for a good few years until I went to see Marcus Miller at the Jazz Cafe in London in 2007, where I was inspired to retrieve my Jaydee from the back of the wardrobe and start playing again.

I thought it was about time that I got it restored to it's former glory, so in March 2008, I took it into John Diggins workshop in Birmingham to have it restored. He replaced the pick-up, installed the active circuitry and gave the bass a full service - all for £160, great value for money!

Moving on, in 2009 I bought a Musicman Bass and unfortunately my Jaydee was relegated to being a back up bass. Sadly, I rarely play it and it only gets used these days for those occasions when I fancy jam with the odd Level 42 track in my bedroom.

I've decided to sell it as I need the cash.

As you can see it's in pretty good condition for a guitar that is probably nearly 30 years old and has been gigged. Most of the nicks and dings perpertrated by the previous owner, but I've probably added one or two over the years.

I'm looking for around £650ono. I think this is a reasonable price for such a fine instrument.

Ideally, I would prefer someone to collect it. But, I can probably arrange to have it posted, if can make arrangements for payment.

Photos attached, any questions get in touch.

Nice bass - very similar to mine which is currently with John having an upgarde on the p/ups..the knobs/switches are different to mine though which is odd as it's also an 87 model..hopefully Nick (Doctor of the Bass) will be along shortly to explain why..

Best of luck with the steal - at this price that's what somebody's going to get!!

Not sure how old my Jaydee is?

I assumed it had to be a 3-4 years old when I bought in 87-88, because of the amount of nicks and dings to the body. And the hatchet job to the back pickup.

If you look closely around the back pickup you can see where the previous owner of the bass drilled the holes to fit the Reflex pickup. When I took it into JD he filled the holes and did his best to polish out some of the minor nicks.

What's the serial number, that will tell you?

Roadies typically have black plastic knobs for the EQ controls, but there is no reason why someone could not ask for brass knobs.

Allo!

A fine bass! It looks to me like a fairly early model, reason being the body edge has the older style `Fender' radius as opposed to the deeper `curved' rad that most Jaydees have - I would hazard a guess that its from 1982 or '83! Knobs on JDs vary as John would chop and change to suit, plus owners tend to modify them too! The serial number will allow a date to be ascertained!

Keep it funkae!

Nick (Mick, you are most welcome to visit me anytime apart from Mondays!! Give me a bell though just in case! 07961 880770!)

Looks like a series 1 body shape- I'm guessing as early as '81.
Its a Series II but the neck pickup is a tad closer to the neck than normal! Does give it a Series I vibe though brother!
Sorry mate- it looks like a series 1 to me! The sunburst makes it look otherwise.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. The Series II's are quite a bit slimmer at the waist than the I's and III's. There's also the age of it, the II's were introduced in 1983 or thereabouts.

The Serial number of the bass is 01064 - so what year does that make it?

I believe that would make it from 1981 and roughly the 64th bass made although it's a bit more complicated than that. Slacker is the winner!
