Help - New bass

Hi

It's another topic asking help for a new bass. I have a Squier P-bass and an Ashdown amplification. I like P-basses, but I loved the Yamaha TRB1005 when I play it. I have 500/600 euros, and I'm from Portugal, so it's impossible get a used bass from UK (better prices, better choices, better basses, in UK).

I would like a passive/active bass with different options and sounds, so I think that G&L, but I have never tried. It's 500eur new... But an active or passive bass, only, it's ok! I tried Yamaha TRB1005 in a store and it was very very good, the best bass that I have played in my life. With 600eur I can get one used. I though Squier VM Precision Bass Amber because I love P-basses, but I think that an Yamaha or G&L it is a better choice... The same to Fender, but who knows...

I don't know what to buy... It's a difficult choice... Who wants to help?

The Squier VM series gets great reviews from everyone. You didn't say, but if you like a jazz bass at all, you already know they're very versatile; I'm crazy about mine (Squier jazz).

I don't like very much Jazz Basses, compared to the Precisions or Yamaha. They are pretty, but I don't like to much play on them... For now, I'm thinking in the Yamaha TRB seriously.
I tried a G&L L2000 Made in USA, but it was very bad, fretless was not good (in my opinion), preamp tricky with problems... it wasn't a good experience.. that G&L was costing 300 eur, so the price explains everything. I'm going to try one G&L, but is difficult... I'm curious about the sound, features and the passive/active way.

Isn't there other options, or are this the best options at this price?

What's the difference of Yamaha TRB1005 or TRB 5II? Well, another thing: I use 4 strings, and I dont need 5 strings for now, but in the future, who knows... When I tryed the Yamaha TRB1005, the 5 string was perfect, but I don't use it very much, but it doesn't bother me very much... Maybe it would be better the 5 string version?

Sorry about my english.

Basically the TRB 5II was the model made before the TRB1005, the TRB 5II are considered slightly better due to their pickups having a slight more depth to them.
Also the TRB 5II (along with the 4II and 6II) were made in Japan where the TRB1005 (and 1004, 1006) are made in China I believe.

To be honestly apart from a slight cosmetic change they are both excellent basses, both active both build like tanks and you should be able to get them both second hand for around the same price.

A TRB 5II in very good condition should cost around 400 to 450 Euros where a TRB1005 might cost you up to around 500 Euros.

I would go for the 5 string versions because they are much easier to find than the 4 string versions and plus you will get used to having that B string there and you will start to use it, didnt take me long to get used to it anyway lol :)

EDIT: My bad the TRB1004/5/6 are made in China not Korea :)

Thank you :) In Portugal they are a little more expensive. I wish a TRB 5II should cost around 400/450 euros. I saw two TRB 5II, one at ebay.de and the other at ebay.it and they are 599 euros and 550 euros respectively. And it is a TRB 4 here in Portugal costing 650 euros with case... But maybe the 5string version is a better choice.

I just need to gain some money and wait for a good bargain. I will give preference to the TRB 5II.

But I will try the G&L only to see what's made of! But certainly I will go to the Yamaha! Yes, they come in some great colours, and you have the best one! Very nice! And it was a great bargain. I wish I could get one

If that was a USA G&L L2000 for 300 Euros, that's an incredible price. Are you sure it wasn't a "tribute" series made in the east? That's still a good price though, assuming that it all works ok.

If I were you, I'd look at MIJ P basses (if you're going for a 4 string), Musicman Subs, Warwick Corvette STDs can be got for roughly your budget as well as G&L Tribute L2000s/2500s.

It says that was a Made in USA (it was in the headstock) and the seller told me, but it was in a bad condition, the preamp was very tricky and the person who did the fretless have did it very bad. It is what I say: that bass was in bad condition! 300 euros for that bass, and I will lose very money extra for recovery of that bass, and without knowing the result. But i'm going to try one G&L in good condition one day...

Here in Portugal there aren't MIJ second hand, I have researched and nothing. (*) Musicmans I have tryed and I prefer a lot Yamaha TRBs, unless a Stingray... but there's no money, and for the money of the stingray I would go to another option.

Warwick... I'm not fan... I don't like it.

(*) I have saw one that was selled. 650 euros

I have been watching MTD's and i saw this basses with a great price (I think):

What do you say about this basses? Compared to the Yamaha TRB and the G&L...? I have never played a MTD...
