Gear Acquisition Syndrome

I suppose GAS comes from a variety of sources - you hear someone play something lovely on a particular bass, you play someone else's, you read a good review or just see a pic on basschat and suddenly you want your own... or you actually "rationally" think that it'd be useful!
I'm sure we've all had GAS for various basses for various reasons, but what's your number one cause? I think my main one is seeing basses for sale on here/ebay/anywhere and being able to afford it - if it looks nice and I have the space, I just have to have it!

I hear a tone I like and then I become conditioned to the appearance of a bass.

e.g.

Hear Jamerson -> suddenly like the tail flick on a P.
Hear Stuart Zender -> Streamers become irresistible
Flea/BE -> MMs are the schmex
Hear Andy Fraser -> Eb-3s are irresistable

etc.etc. Product placement is so important.

So the tone is always the cue for me. Unfortunately, more often than not, there's a billion pound backline behind them. So instead, I just GAS for a nice sounding upright. I can rationalise that.

I seem to have got it out of my system! I'd rather get one really nice instrument and focus on getting every sound I want from that (ok, I have got a new one now but it took years of planning to suss out how to improve on my old bass) and then get the best rig possible to get that heard (and again avoid messing with it - yes, I've changed everything once over the last 9 years but that's not a bad record!)

To look at if from another perspective, how many classical musicians do you see constantly changing their gear?

Are you a bass player or a bass buyer? :)

my G.A.S. has died down since I started learning guitar and keyboards as well- I'm too preoccupied with learning those than to get bored with the basses i have.

although bass porn is still fun to look at (good quality, tastefully done bass porn, mind)

I get mine from here and ebay mostly. well the TB and EBMM boards too but I cant be ersed with the hassles of bringing a bass over and most of what I like is on here most days anyway. I've been a right gear glutton since the turn of the year so I'm abstaining from any more till about April/May :)
