Gibson SG Bass

Dont have one lad but I played one about a year ago when we had a few shows with Italian Doomsters Misty Morning. Proper vintage job. Great neck, really comfortable and fast too. What I found surprising was the weight, a bit more than I expected. Tone wise it was a little limited but the sound is unmistakable, went very well with a crybaby and overdrive. Overall it was a smashing bass.
Personally I'd prefer the ESP/Ltd Viper. More tonal options and the slightly offset body sits better. Might be worth a shot?

I just purchased (and promptly returned) a Gibson SG supreme bass. I really wanted to like it, but instead I immediately took a dislike to it.

The sound was really thin on the bridge pickup, and just horrible on the neck pickup. The weight was fairly heavy for such a small bass and it's balance was terrible...even with a 4" suede backed leather strap it still wanted to neck dive. To be honest there was nothing about it I particularly liked :)

I think I'm stuck firmly in the Fender camp, so if you like P basses you might not like an SG.
You ought to try an Epi EB3

Much cheaper and with a proper 34" scale length :)
It was actually the short scale aspect I was most curious about. I was hoping for a mellower sort of sound, instead it was just bad :)

I'd certainly like to try an EB3 if I get the chance...

If you are into SG-type basses, check out Mike Watt's basses in his "Thud Staff" section.

He's done various customisations and tweaks to the different models he has had over the years.

Watt was the bassist in The Minutemen and Firehose and has been bassing for J.Mascis and Iggy and the Stooges for some years.

I think Mike Watt used an original T.bird for some Minutemen stuff and a J/P maple neck Precision for most of fIREHOSE. That said, he seems pretty well sold on hot rodded short scale EBs these days. I know this because Mike Watt is probably the biggest single reason I started playing bass guitar and definitely worth checking out whatever you play. Here's another link to Mike Watt and Gibson basses in particular flyguitars. I'd also recommend you just get yourself an Epi EB-0. It's the best hundred quid I ever spent and that's after twenty odd years of Jazzes, Precisions and Stingrays. It's a Marmite thing but it's worth trying.
