Time for a new 5 string bass.

I went to florida about 8 weeks ago. My advice would be to do your homework on what shops there are and where they are, print out detailed maps. The size of florida really shocked me and music shops there seemed well hidden in Miami and Naples. The other thing is use the exchange rate to calculate what basses are cheaper there than here, because some come out to the same price and some will save you roughly £2-300.

If you go to the bass central in orlando please check out the Elrick basses and write a review because magazines across the pond have rated them very highly.

The Carvin was 15mm, which was less than my 7 string basses. The bass sounded immense, but (for me) was uncomfortable to play. It's gone to a good home though which I'm pleased about.

Yup, agreed. It seems in general that buying European brands in the USA is pretty much useless. Search other brands and especially the used market and the bargains spring up. MM 5's are plentiful as are Ibanez, Schecter and Fenders. There are US websites like Musician's Friend and Guitar Center with a mixture of used and new and the world is indeed your oyster. Another surprising site is Amazon.

There are huge savings out there, but the search gets a lot harder of you want something out of the ordinary. Specialist sites like Bass Northwest are great, but don't keep their websites up to date. I've missed out on 2 basses already due to stock not being marked as sold. Luckily, I have a OneTel account so my overseas phone calls are cheap, but it's still annoying.

The most annoying thing is "call for price". I know there's a lot of politics with pricing, but in my situation that's not a lot of help.
